The Passionate of the Teacher I’m guessing my title has you judging me for making a parody of the movie, The Passion of the Christ, which is totally acceptable. During my teacher interview, Mrs. Sell kept hammering the idea of being a passionate and enthusiastic teacher. She uttered passionate and enthusiastic numerous times throughout the interview and that was the one of the biggest takeaways. Yes, I interviewed my mother and it was really interesting to hear and understand the jargon my mom was using. I never really had a heart to heart conversation about her views on the educational system and it made me realize that I am really fortunate to have a mother that knows of ins-and-outs of education. The book preaches the idea that passion in the classroom and relationships are greater than content knowledge in the eyes of students. That makes sense and is backed by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Students are more successful when their basics needs are taken care of (such as food, water, and shelter) and when students feel loved. High poverty communities are prone to students who often go to school hungry and unloved, that is why many schools offer free and reduced lunch to all students. Sell, along with countless teachers, dispute some of the state mandated policies that are enacted in public schools. One of her biggest grievances in the educational system is standardized testing. She feels that it takes away from learning about topics that students enjoy. The tests call for teachers to shove the information that will be on the tests down the students’ throats instead of information the students want to learn about. Studying for the test takes the majority of the year and it is ultimately effecting the next generation of teachers. “I think with the age of standards and testing we’ve kind of turned are new teachers into robots in a way.” This is one of the scariest thoughts of becoming a teacher. You will get a degree to basically teach a test. This was one of my topics in the Why Not paper and I think about it a lot. The wise Mrs. Sell said one way to overcome this fear is to realize why you became a teacher in the first place, and that is hopefully change to lives.
