Child development involves the changes that occur in human beings from birth to adolescence. These changes include physical, social, biological, emotional, psychological and intellectual. Growth and maturity rate of children may differ therefore making it hard to determine what is normal. The difference in growth and maturity rate may be as a result of various factors such as genes and diet among others. Although their development rate may differ from one child to another, it is important as a parent to be keen on all the developmental stages of the child. It is also vital to note and interpret behavior as well as support their needs. Good parenting during child development is vital in establishing foundations for adulthood.

Hormonal changes occurring in their bodies may bring about emotional issues as well as a change in behavior. At this stage of life, adolescents are easily influenced by their peers. It is therefore important for a parent to apply effective techniques towards parenting. While parenting an early adolescent, a parent needs to understand that adolescents tend to internalize their parents' values (Bodenhamer, 2010). It requires a strong mindset towards helping an adolescent become a responsible adult. Additionally, a parent needs to formulate an effective way of communication. Having dialogue is one way that would enhance understanding between individuals. It is also vital to listen to what an adolescent has to say. Instead of being judgmental, a parent needs to understand the temperament of an adolescent. This involves the use of logic as well as inductive reasoning to help them make a prudent decision. A parent should also structure temperamental behavior through values and beliefs. According to Bodenhamer (2010), discipline can be instilled through setting a number of rules, clearly defining them and making them mandatory. Parents should also incorporate supervision rather than restriction. Supervision should involve knowing the whereabouts of one’s child. Emotional bonding is yet another useful technique towards better parenting. Once an adolescent emotionally bonds with a parent, it then becomes easy to share their life experiences.
