Thousands of United States military veterans return from war not being able to let go of the horrors experienced overseas. Numerous American soldiers returning from the war experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or encountering a shocking event or trauma. PTSD is a universal mental illness that affects many soldiers all over the world. One out of five military service members on combat tours arrive home with symptoms of PTSD or major depression. While serving overseas, military service members are exposed to a number of traumatic events that could potentially lead to PTSD. PTSD can affect all outlets of the person’s life. Today, there are nearly 200 specialized treatment programs that have been opened to help individuals deal with the traumatizing events that led to the development of their PTSD. The most effective form of counseling documented for PTSD victims is called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). In CBT, therapists direct their patient to alter how they think about his or her trauma. The patient learns to pinpoint certain thoughts or flashbacks that make them feel afraid, or angry. Through this form of therapy, the individual understands that the event they encountered was not their fault. Another type of therapy used is called exposure therapy. This therapy is based off the idea of people learning to deal with inside thoughts and feelings. Therapists would ask their patient to repeatedly talk about their trauma teaching them how to get control of the feelings regarding the trauma. Many other therapies are available depending on the individual. This is the reason so many service members being away from home for so long can cause issues between relationships. These problems can add stress to the already timid soldiers. OEF/OIF service members have to be alert around the clock, always watching each other’s backs, always being at risk for traumas to occur. Having to watch or be the one to carry out gruesome commands. These are just some factors that can lead to the development of PTSD. Another cause of stress reported by soldiers is military sexual traumas (MST).
