“ It has been said that time heals all wounds, I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue, and the pain lessens, but is never gone.” (Kennedy). This quote has direct correlation with the topic of this paper because it shows the true severity of how PTSD affects us as people. The purpose of this paper is to examine Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by analyzing the causes, symptoms, and treatments.
Before we get into the main causes, symptoms, and treatments associated with PTSD let's shed some light on the general background. PTSD is a mental condition often triggered by witnessing or experiencing a traumatically terrifying event. People who suffer from PTSD often relive the traumatic experience over and over again through nightmares and flashbacks. Traumatic reminders or thinking about the trauma when they attempt at doing something can also be triggers.
There are many causes for PTSD. Common cases are caused by experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, such as military combat, natural disasters, serious accidents, and/or physical assault. Group therapy is where you can talk freely with a group of people that have been through a similar traumatic event and who have PTSD. For some people, sharing their story with others helps them feel more comfortable and as if they are not completely alone. It can help them cope with symptoms, memories, and other aspects of their life. Group therapy helps you build strong relationships with others who understand and helps you learn how to deal with all of your anger, rage, guilt, shame, and fear.
