The Oregon standoff has been a big story in 2016. This issue has been dragged out for a month now. The issue has been taken place in Harney County where citizens are tired of this pointless standoff interfering with their daily lives. This has been a long and confusing month for all the county. The Bundy family comes out of nowhere with many supports claiming they are fighting for the rights of the people and protecting the Hammond family. The Hammond family has no ties with the Bundy family and since the standoff began they have been distancing themselves from the standoff. They are holding up a wildlife refuge and they are all from out of state. They came in gun blazing and it is now their outpost. While no one was killed it still is a very dangerous act. While we have the global threat of ISIS we can compare that extremist group to these militiamen in Oregon. They are both fighting for what they think is right by using terror. We should be treating future arrests of the Bundys as if they were terrorist. The Washington Monthly says “Cliven Bundy and his miscreants got away with a wide range of crimes due to the forbearance of federal officials.” Author David Atkins calls the Bundy clan clowns and compares the ISIS and the Bundys by saying they both want to see a fall of the government. The issue comes up as to why force isn’t being applied to arrest the Bundys. While other left-wing activationist groups are getting teargassed and more just from protesting. There seems to be a battle between keeping things traditionally versus making an almost whole new America. Change is needed and is a natural thing. But with this change the traditionally folks seem to think that the government is trying to go against them. So they fight back instead of adapting to the change. They use terror as a means to get their point across. The Oregon standoff is a pathetic attempt for the Bundys to say they are changing America. They found success and are that hoping to be unstoppable. Unfortunately this the real world and their are consequences for behavior like taking over a wildlife refuge. From this action it shows that Americans need more gun laws so that not everyone can have guns. This would decrease the amount of shooting and people would be all around safer without guns. Tragedy after tragedy, people find themselves mourning over the lives lost. And over and over again, they look back to see how they could have prevented it. People continue to argue and constantly debate what actions should be taken, and while doing so, more and more people lose their lives at the hands of gun violence. It’s clear to see that not much has been done to keep these weapons out of the wrongs hands: the shootings at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech have shown that. What would happen if there were to be another devastating shooting to occur? How would people react? Or would they just argue some more, while the wrong people can still easily get a hold of guns? The only way they can ever gain control of anything is by controlling the source of the problem, where people are able to freely purchase guns without restrictions. In order to reduce gun-related crime, unlicensed gun sellers should be required to run background checks on their customers.
Facts: On October 3, 1974, Memphis Police Officers Hymon and Wright were dispatched to answer a “prowler inside call.” When the police arrived at the scene, a neighbor gestured to the house where she had heard glass breaking and that someone was breaking into the house. While one of the officer radioed that they were on the scene, the other officer went to the rear of the house hearing a door slam and saw someone run across the backyard. The suspect, Edward Garner stopped at a 6-feet-high fence at the edge of the yard and proceeded to climb the fence as the police officer called out “police, halt.” The police officer figured that if Garner made it over the fence he would get away and also “figured” that Garner was unarmed. Officer Hymon then shot him, hitting him in the back of the head. In using deadly force to prevent the escape of Garner, Hymon used the argument that actions were made under the authority of the Tennessee statute and pursuant to Police Department policy. Although the department’s policy was slightly more restrictive than the statute it still allowed the use of deadly force in cases of burglary. Garner’s fathers’ argument was made that his son was shot unconstitutionally because he was captured and shot possessing ten dollars that he had stolen and being unarmed showing no threat of danger to the officer. Leonard Peltier is currently serving time in the Leavenworth federal penitentiary for the shooting deaths of two Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) agents. According to FBI documents, at around 11:50 A.M. on June 26th, 1975, agents Jack Color and Ron Williams were supposedly searching for Jimmy Eagle, a thief wanted for stealing a pair of cowboy boots. The agents encroached on the Jumping Bull Compound in Oglala, South Dakota of the Pine Ridge reservation, in two separate vehicles that no one could recognize (Incident). In this area, there were several members of the American Indian Movement (AIM). After the intrusion of the agents, someone-and it is unsure who-fired a shot and a shoot out began. By the end of the shoot out at Pine Ridge, Williams, Color, and one AIM activist, Joe Stuntz Killsright, were dead (Incident). Peltier was one of the AIM members at the Jumping Bull Compound, and ultimately he was charged and convicted on murder charges. There is a great controversy surrounding the Peltier case. A large contingency of both domestic and international citizens and organizations feel that Peltier has been wrongly convicted, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government authorities here feel as justice was served.
In conclusion, the Kent State shooting was a tragedy that has never really had anyone held responsible. Thirty-eight years later, “Official investigations as to exactly what happened at Kent State were inconclusive.” The days preceding the shootings, the students burned down the ROTC building, protested on the commons, and threw rubbish at police officers. The violent actions of the students put the law enforcement officials and National Guardsmen around them on edge. On the other side, the Guardsmen arrived in full combat gear to put down unarmed college students. There was no reason for the soldiers to fire at the students that were hundreds of feet away from them. Whether one of the soldiers fired in a moment of panic or if they were order to commence shooting may never be known.

The idea of Texas secession is not a new one. The decision in the 1869 Supreme Court Case Texas v. The debate over firearms has been polarized for too long. Gun law is a never-ending issue because there hardly is any true debate. Americans (and even gun owners) do support the governments efforts to make sure guns are less dangerous in violent hands, but that is the main problem-the guns getting in the wrong human hands. Millions of law-abiding Americans do own and do enjoy their guns. But criminals and sometimes-disconcerted kids often use firearms to kill. The use of firearms has increased tremendously. An average day in Los Angeles is four people dying in a gun related crime and the United States faces approximately 87 deaths a day. There are more than 200 million guns in circulation in the United States and if you don’t own a firearm, chances are that your neighbor or friend does (Fineman 27). Sure, the Founding Fathers incorporated the Second Amendment as “the right to keep and bear arms,” but it did not give the distinction of using guns to kill more children and people than anywhere in the world.
Unfortunately, Heatwole takes this whole situation way too far. A statement an affidavit stated, “He was aware that his actions were against the law and that he was aware of the potential consequences for his actions…” (“Student Charged”). To explain, he knew that he was risking thousands of innocent lives, just to bring the point across that anyone can go through TSA with suspicious items on them. This affidavit goes on to state, “...that his actions were an act of civil disobedience with the aim of improving public safety for the air-traveling public” (“Student charged”). His actions were not acts of civil disobedience. If you have to endanger the lives of thousands air-travelers for the need to increase the safety of traveling, that is plain selfishness. The basic reasoning as to why Heatwole wanted to commit these acts was, as a result of civil disobedience. In relation to, civil disobedience is defined as a peaceful form of political protest, in which Heatwole did not achieve by his actions.
