Finding the balance of both optimism and pessimism is crucial in life. In the novel Candide, written by Voltaire, Candide, the main character, experiences pain, sorrow, and war. Candide fails to recognize and acknowledge that bad things do indeed happen and not everything is for the best. but getting him to that point wasn't easy. Throughout the book, Candide remains optimistic because he bases his philosophy off of his mentor, Pangloss. He is oblivious and doesn't see the world as it really is. People continue to take advantage of him and he doesn't recognize this. He sees the bad as good and the good as amazing. His philosophy is that he lives in the best of all possible worlds. Knowing ‘why’ gives people hope and comfort. However, Candide isn’t driven enough to find the answers to unanswered questions that his world provides him with. He carries on with his life and doesn't ever think for himself. Candide blindly accepts other people's philosophies which keeps him high up on the optimistic scale because he believes that it "is impossible for things to not be where they are because everything is for the best" (35). This quote represents Pangloss’ philosophy which is that since God is the controller of cause, effect, and logic everything happens for the best. Candide has seen sorrow, death pain, and war, yet he still believes that everything is for the best. As Candide sees more of the world, he becomes less convinced that the world is all good. While Candide is talking to Martin he says, "[he] [is] afraid Pangloss cruelly deceived [him] when he told me that all is for the best in this world"(43). Before, Candide wasn't able to think for himself and always thinks about what Dr. Pangloss would say even though he is presumed dead. As candide begins to let go of Pangloss and forget more about him and his teachings, is when he starts to think for himself.
