In Beau Lotto’s Ted Talk “Optical Illusions Show How We See” we could appreciate how our perception can vary based on the context. He explained the importance that color has in our lives and all of the factors that can alter how we perceive a color, such as illumination. Lotto showed how the light that comes through our eyes could mean anything, however it is our brain’s job to give meaning to that information by using patterns, associations, knowledge from past experiences, etc. As an example, he showed two squares with a dot in the middle, the one in the left was green and the one in the right is red. Under the two squares there was a picture of a desert with a dot in the middle as well. We needed to look at the dot between the colored squares
While the studies at Governor’s School are noticeably more advanced and require more effort than at regular public schools, I see this rigor as the key to my academic success. For me, the classes I take that constantly introduce new thoughts that test my capability to “think outside the box”, are the ones that capture all my attention and interest. For example, while working with the Sierpinski Triangle at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth geometry camp, I was struck with a strong determination to figure out the secret to the pattern. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the Sierpinski Triangle is “a fractal based on a triangle with four equal triangles inscribed in it. The central triangle is removed and each of the other three treated as the original was, and so on, creating an infinite regression in a finite space.” By constructing a table with the number black and white triangles in each figure, I realized that it was easier to see the relations between the numbers. At Governor’s School, I expect to be provided with stimulating concepts in order to challenge my exceptional thinking.
Have you ever thought what actually influences our perception of stimuli we encounter on a daily basis? The topic of this paper is perception. Many times, the way we take in information from the world, is entirely up us as an individual but most times perception is influenced by external factors, which cannot be controlled. Perception is an opinion held by individuals regarding how things seem in the real world. The area regarding perception interests me greatly because I feel it is very interesting how different individuals have different ways to perceive the same exact information. Perception is the process in which we learn about the world around us. Specifically, I want to learn what mechanisms truly influence perception and how those affect our daily lives.
The mental and physical processes that work together is what creates the ability for the mind to properly perceive the information that is received. The brain and the senses interact in such a way that gives the mind freedom to interpret this information into the individual’s own reality. Without this combination of influences, it would mean that the mind does not go beyond the information given because it would simply be a biological function and the unique interpretation of events could not happen. But since the mental and physical processes do work together the mind takes the information that is received and the mind constructs different interpretations of the sensory information. There are many ways where this can be advantageous. In one way, the mind creating interpretations of information is what allows for individuality and for different opinions in situations. Without the interpretations it would seem that human perception of events would be identical in every way. Our five senses –sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch help the ways in which we perceive the world around us. And while they seem to work independently at time they can effect each other and the way we comprehend something. Seeing something pretty, touching something soft, eating something cold and smelling something rotten are the sense we use to connect with the world around us and will all effect how we move forward in that situation. When you look at the top picture say the color of the word not the word itself. It is harder than it seems and takes a little practice to do it efficiently. Well, let's take a look at the brain. From being in class, my awareness about what I'm doing, what I'm seeing, what I'm hearing, what I'm thinking has come to reflect upon not just what, but how is it all being done by my brain. This morning I woke up, my eyes opened, I looked out my window, I saw the sun rising, it was this beautifully deep yellow/orange color. I thought, "How beautiful" and I smiled with a sense and feeling of wonderment. It could be said that I experienced nothing out of the ordinary this morning. Yet, if I could narrate these few activities in terms of the networking of neurons resulting in my eyes opening, my sight of the sun, my ability to perceive its color, my inner acknowledgment of its beauty and the emotions that sight evoked in me, you would be reading for a very long time and what I did this morning would indeed present itself in quite an extraordinary light. It is in recognition of this, with respect to the brain's aptitudes, that Howard Hughes in his paper, "Seeing, Hearing and Smelling the World" quoted May Pines in expressing, "We can recognize a friend instantly-full face, in profile, or even by the back of his head. We can distinguish hundreds of colors and possibly as many as 10,000 smells. We can feel a feather as it brushes our skin, hear the faint rustle of a leaf. It all seems so effortless: we open our eyes or ears and let the world stream in. I had taken it for granted that the whole world shared these perceptions with me, so my father's perplexed reaction was totally unexpected. From my point of view, I felt as if I'd made a statement as ordinary as "apples are red" and "leaves are green" and had elicited a thoroughly bewildered response. In The Anatomy of Judgment, M. L. J. Abercrombie explains how information is gained through our perception. Abercrombie argues that interpretation is a very complicated task which we have been learning to do ever since we were born.
