In comparison to men, desistance was more sudden for women. There was often a link between desistance and the birth of a child (Giordano, 2002). The influence of close relationships with non offenders was higher for women than men as was education when it came to desistance. Opportunity for crime has a similar impact for both males and females. Presence of opportunity will increase risk of entering into crime. women, however are more likely than men to transition out of crime and to maintain their desistance. A possible reason that this may be the case is the more damaging impacts that crime can have on a female’s life (Uggen, 1998, pp. 22-29).

There is evidence to suggest that the consequences of female delinquency are higher than those faced by males. This is especially true for early onset female offenders. Girls who experience onset in adolescence are more likely to experience higher mortality rates, a plethora of psychiatric problems, dysfunctional and violent relationships, poor educational achievement and less stable work histories. Males show a pattern of being able to desist for crime in adulthood especially upon attaining adult responsibilities but the same is not true for female offenders. In some cases, the inverse is true as marriage to a deviant partner may encourage continued involvement in crime during adulthood. In many cases it is females rather than males who will also experience more relationship problems. Females experiencing antisocial tendencies also tend to become mothers at a younger age and it is these persons who are left without adequate resources to care for themselves and their children. These findings show that women disproportionately face harsher consequences than males for delinquent acts (Elizabeth Cauffman, 2008).
