The operating room is a place in the hospital where surgical operations are carried out in a sterile environment. When patients undergo surgery, their anxiety levels may vary. I have observed that the two patients who came in for robotics hernia repair were prepared for the surgery and their level of anxiety were not as pronounced. Their family members were with them and have provided them the support they needed. They were both calm and agreed to the surgical procedure with no doubt and were reassured by the staff that their safety is of utmost importance. The pre-surgery nurse, operating nurse and the post anesthesia care unit (recovery) nurse provided the patients with great level of assistance and education. The scrub tech was responsible for placing all the surgical instruments on a sterile table and placing each via no touch technique. The scrub technician also informed the circulating nurse of any supplies needed that were not in the sterile table and the circulating nurse handed the needed instruments or supplies through opening the packages in a sterile manner. The circulating nurse ensured that the instruments and machines were functioning, ensured the availability of supplies and materials, made a checklist of the instruments to be used for the surgery, double checked the list of instruments with the scrub technician and documented intraoperative events. The circulating nurse also verified consent from the patient, initiated the time out or surgical pause before the surgery begun and “debriefing” which covered the current condition of the patient or any potential problem that may have arisen during or after the surgery. Furthermore, the circulating nurse also communicated with the recovery room nurse for the transfer of the patient.
