Ken Kesey was a great writer during the 1960's and one of his famous books was the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The novel talks in the perspective of a Native American named Chief Bromden. He is the narrator of the story who tells about the problems inside the mental institute ranging from mental problems in patients to the cruelty of the ones responsible of the ward. In the novel, Ken Kesey uses the roles of women from one side of extreme to the other as a motif in his literature novel to develop a major theme in the book. He does this by introducing Miss Ratched, the dominator in the story, the background of Chief Bromden, and the use of McMurphy's observation and his past to persuade the readers the role of women in society in 1960's.
At the beginning of the book, the readers are introduce to Miss Ratched, the antagonistic woman in the book, who control her ward through fear of oppressive force and false kindness. Chief gives the reader the observation of the chill upon meeting Miss Ratched: "I can see she's furious clean out of control. She's going to tear the black bastards limb from limb, she's so furious" (4-5). The observation given by Chief Bromden characterize Miss Ratched as an evil person who asserts her sexuality over men. She is also known as "Big Nurse" that is often referenced as oppressive with authority. The black male workers are also subject to her powerful seniority over them. These descriptions characterize Miss Ratched as the other side of the extreme in female role who held much power like men do and assert her sexuality over them. The main motif of the book is the roles of woman, from the extreme of Miss Ratched's cruelty, the backstory of Chief Bromden's mom oppressive force against his father, and the interaction of McMurphy with Candy and the Japanese Nurse all helps to develop the major theme through the motif. Miss Ratched show her cruelty by shaming the patients down in sexuality and pride. The other extreme sign shows Candy's willingness of doing things she's told while Kesey finds the ideal middle role, characterized by the compassionate Japanese nurse. Kesey argues the feminine qualities that females should have in the 1960's throughout his book and use motif to keep informing the readers about the major theme of the book in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
