Are the spectators that go to the Sochi, Olympics safe? Military compounds and sports stadiums are not often thought of as similar places, but it’s hard to tell the difference in Sochi, Russia. Security for the Olympics has increased due to recent terrorist threats and regional instability. Threats, like those from “black widow” bombers, and recent attacks, like the bombing at a Volgograd train station, have led many fans to question if they should go to these games. Some people even question if athletes should compete. This issue is discussed in “How Safe is Sochi? Travelers Weigh Their Options as Olympics Near” by Catherine Soichet. Despite this apprehension, examination of the security shows that it is nearly impossible to slip in and equally as difficult to carry out an attack once inside, so the Olympics are safe. …show more content…

In order to get their event passes, visitors must “provide photos, passport information and ticket numbers in advance” (Shoichet 2). Russian officials have beefed up security by forcing fans to present tickets, passports, and pictures. These officers clearly are not taking any chances when it comes to security, and these measures will weed out any terrorists trying to sneak in. Many have expressed concern over the close proximity of terrorists to Sochi. However, it is irrelevant how far or close to Sochi the terrorists are, for these proceedings will prevent them from getting event passes. Just as a germ cannot do any harm without first getting inside someone's body, the terrorists cannot hurt anyone until they get inside the Olympics.
