The Olmec ball sports and our ball sports are very different, but yet the same. Modern day ball sports and the Olmec ball sport are both played on courts, where theirs were stone, ours can be concrete, asphalt, wood, or grass. In both modern day and Olmec, there was a winner and a loser, the winner on both sports received trophies. The only difference in that is that their loser was often times decapitated or killed. The trophies of the winners were buried with the person when they died for the Olmec. Depending on where you were or the religion, the captain and the team both got killed. Could you imagine that? They have to use their hips and elbows and legs to control the ball to go into the hoops. Most of the religions only allowed two to three people on the court for each team and they could only be males. The sport was too rough for women to be playing. In fact, players often wore helmets, kneepads, elbow pads, chest protectors and gloves. Only the goalie in soccer of modern day sports has to wear gloves and that’s not really for protection. Football players have to wear pads but our football is about half the size of the ball they are using. The ball can range anywhere from ten to thirty centimeters in diameter and can weigh anywhere between five hundred grams to three and a half kilograms. The major differences in these two sports is the losers were killed and if they were decapitated the skulls were put on display in a cabinet beside the court.
