Literary Analysis: character analysis
If you bought land, you wouldn't like someone to take it from you just because they are stronger than you. This is basically what happened to Okonkwo, a strong fearless character from the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe. Okonkwo is a leader from Umuofia, a village in Africa. His world starts to crumble when a tragedy happens because he doesn't want to be seen as weak. Okonkwo doesn't like to show any type of weakness to anyone. He fears that if he shows weakness, they will no longer see him as the strong leader he says he is. Okonkwo’s dad is dead but Okonkwo but he sees his dad’s ghost almost everywhere. “That man was one of the greatest men in Umuofia. You drive him to kill himself.” Pg.208 Para.2 This quote proves that the white men admit that they bullied Okonkwo to death. Okonkwo didn't give up without a fight though. He tried to protect his land and people from white men that were invading his land. “If a man comes into my hut and defecates on floor, what do I do? Do I shut my eyes? No! I take a stick and break his head!” Pg.88 Para.4 This quotes shows how defensive Okonkwo is. It also shows that Okonkwo is fighting back the white men that are trying to take his land.
The author’s purpose is to demonstrate why and how Okonkwo’s world fell apart. “Perhaps your men can help us bring him down and bully him.” Pg.207 Para.2 The author’s purpose is to make us realize that Okonkwo ended up being bullied to death. “Take down the body.” Pg.208 Para.4 This proves that the District Commissioner was not a good person in the first place and he was bad all along.
