When Ofsted are inspecting a school, the quality of teaching is assessed though lesson observations. Wider evidence is also evaluated, including looking at pupils work, and talking to them about their learning and progress’ (Bousted, 2015). Therefore, could the quality of a school’s teaching staff be assessed through a range of methods, including observations and other Ofsted measures? It could be argued that a teachers pay should not directly correlate with the achievement of their pupils through assessment data. Having said this, as recognised by Brady, as summative assessment provides schools with quantitative data as it looks at a numerical score (2014), this is debatably more measurable than the qualitative and subjective data that would be collected through lesson observations and discussions with pupils. As identified by the Sutton Trust, the quality of teaching is difficult to measure, quantify or rank, ‘Teaching itself is a professional skill where no one approach is correct or incorrect’, (2013). Subsequently, a combination of approaches will provide a better insight of teacher effectiveness, rather than the data gained from a single academic year. The subjectivity Whittaker mentions could indicate why the pass mark for the 2016 SAT’s scores was not to the expected standards. Similarly, director of assessment research, Oates, identified that the current assessment situation was ‘extremely problematic’, however the real issue was not with pupils being subjected to too much testing, or the content of the assessments, rather how the results were used
