Alienation is the state or experience of being isolated from a group or an activity. Someone can be segregated even though they have someone in their life. What has happened to a person can cause them to feel isolated and it can’t be measured by the amount of people in one's life. Alienation is a main theme in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck uses the theme of Disaffection a fair amount of the time in this book to show that any one person can be secluded from others. Alienation is present in the characters Crooks, Curley's Wife, and Lennie from when they are first seen. Crooks is Alienated in almost every shape, way, and form. Curley is forcing her to stay in their home that is quite miniscule. Curley doesn’t want her to go roaming around with freedom to do anything she wants to thus making her stay home. Curley thinks that she will cheat on him with another guy from the ranch. Secondly Curley's Wife is given the cold-shoulder from the workers on the ranch. The workers don’t want a predicament with Curley so they try to evade Curley's Wife or they try to coax her to other places to get her out of their hair. Curley's Wife’s pursuit to flirt with the men simply drives them farther away. Candy says “I think Curley’s married… a tart” (Steinbeck chapter 2). Curley's Wife has tried flirting with all the guys many times that they are sick of her. Lastly, Curley's Wife is the only Female on the entire ranch. None of the other men have wives or kids; consequently, she has to travel into town if she wanted to talk to another female. Curley’s Wife is trying to break this isolation every chance that she can solely get some attention. Lennie is a third person that is alienated from the rest of the people. Lennie has the brain of a four year old due to being mentally challenged. People like Lennie are sent to hospitals if they can’t work or if they don’t have someone to take care of them because Lennie's disability isn’t understood. Secondly Lennie doesn’t have any family in his life. His parents are gone and his Aunt Clara has died leaving George a long time friend to take care of Lennie.     She is frequently held responsible for numerous problems the men have. Everyone gets annoyed by her, since she constantly wears provocative clothing and flirts with the guys.
