Anger is one of the hardest emotions to control. Often, people hold it in, allowing it to build until it bursts, causing damage. In Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the parents of a child with autism struggle to keep their cool around their son. Christopher’s mother fails to mask her emotions around her son, leaving his father to take care of him. Although his father tries to maintain calm, he often yells at Christopher as his son watches on in careful concentration. Haddon’s authorial choice of making Christopher’s parents lash out reveals irony in that Christopher is the one with the disorder yet is calm, analyzing situations objectively. When Christopher lands himself in jail after a misunderstanding, his father is furious and yells at him. Rather than yelling back, Christopher thought to himself, “I could tell that he was angry because he was shouting, and I didn’t want to make him angry so I didn’t say anything else until we got home” (Haddon 21). Taking the time to observe the situation and think through how to respond helps Christopher stay calm and not further anger his father. Children with disorders like …show more content…
In his book review, “The Remains of the Dog,” Jay McInerney discusses how Christopher’s, “severely logical point of view,” draws the reader to question the, “common sense and the erratic emotionalism of the normal citizens who surround [Christopher].” Being put in Christopher’s shoes, on the receiving end of his parents’ aggression, highlights the difference between the “severely logical” Christopher and the average teenager, who would most likely yell back at their parents. His disorder causes him to analyze every situation but only act out when one of his triggers, like being touched, is set off. When he is left untouched he is able to diffuse his parent’s anger by calmly agreeing to their
The clip ‘Trouble with Evan’ narrates the struggle of a boy named Evan that puts his stepdad Mike and his mother Karen through stress because of his ill manners. Despite him being at a tender age of 11 years and in 6th grade, his mannerism is worrying because he is already engaging in morally unacceptable activities such as shoplifting, smoking, and gross disobedience, bullying other children and even stealing from his parents. Therefore, this puts his parents under severe psychological stress as they try to figure where their parenting is going wrong in a bid together to make him grow morally upright (Henning, 2016). Evan’s behavior was also straining his relationship with his parents and this stressed the parents as they tried to figure out different ways in which they could once again improve their relationship with their son. In addition, the clip revolves around trying to uncover the mystery as to what could be causing Evan’s unacceptable behavior.

It has become paramount that composers utilise various techniques in order to influence an individual’s perception of the world. As seen through the eyes of an Aspergers sufferer, Christopher Boone, Mark Haddon’s inventive novel entitle ‘The Curious incident of the Dog in the Night Time’, skilfully portrays how the decisions of significant characters and their relationships shape the overall message about the difficulties of living with a limiting social condition. Haddon employs a myriad of techniques through the concepts of the conflicting nature of love, the desperation for a world of order and stability, and the value of truth. Along with the reoccurring allusions to mathematics and science in order to display the complexity of human interaction, as he skilfully depicts how both relationships attempt to deal with the issue in their day to day lives.
