“Of Course you cannot know a man completely, his character, his principles, sense of judgment, not till he’s shown his colors, ruling the people, making laws. Experience, there’s the test” (Sophocles 67) Readers of Antigone and Oedipus Rex are encouraged to understand the protagonists Creon and Oedipus and in doing so are encouraged to compare and contrast the charecters. Which begs the question, which of the two Theban rulers was more effective? The answer is Oedipus. Oedipus is the stronger leader in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex & Antigone because he holds the complete respect and admiration of his people and nobility, actively attempts to solve his people’s problems, and is overall more experienced and qualified to rule Thebes than Creon. Oedipus’ relationship with his people fits the Machiavellian standard articulated in his work The Prince “is it better to be loved more than feared, or feared more than loved? The reply is, that one ought to be both feared and loved” (Machiavelli 63). Oedipus achieves this respect through his triumph over the sphinx and maintains it with a stern rule built around action. His acts of heroism lead to the admiration of his people, who have now become dependent on his rule. The priest’s first lines of dialogue from Oedipus the King serve as a strong representation of how the Thebans view Oedipus “Oh Oedipus, king of the land, our greatest power! You see us before you now, men of all ages clinging to your altars” (Sophocles 160), needless to say they admire him.
