Odysseus, the main character in “The Odyssey,” had many tales of adventure and his character was shown greatly in the decisions he made. With the help of the important relationships he made, Odysseus was able to return home to his wife. Some of the important characteristics that Odysseus showed in his journey was his wisdom, his leadership, and his important relationship with Athena.
One of the strong characteristics that Odysseus showed was his wisdom when he needed to. A good example of his wisdom is in Troy it said that, “He devised a scheme in which the Greeks left a wooden horse outside the walls of Troy and tricked the Trojans into taking it inside” (Homer 559). The wisdom that Odysseus, helped the Trojans unlock the gates to the city and defeat the Greeks.When the time was needed for wisdom and a clever way to defeat the Greeks Odysseus was able to come through. Odysseus showed wisdom when he says, “Cyclops, try some wine. Here’s liquor to wash down your scraps of men”(Homer 569). To try to escape, Odysseus and his men try and get the Cyclops drunk. One of the instances were Athena helped Odysseus was when it said, “ Athena appears and informs him of the situation at home”( Homer 595). The situation that she informs him of, is all the suitors being in his house and with his wife. She was very kind for alerting Odysseus and advising him of what he should do. Another example of Athena helping Odysseus along his journey is when it said, “Athena disguises Odysseus as a beggar and directs him to the hut of Eumaeus”(Homer 596). Several reasons that she turned him into a beggar was that she wanted him to be with his family and that she did not want anyone to know that it was really Odysseus. If people knew it was Odysseus than they would try to kill him and overthrow the throne. That is how Athena played a big role in helping
