Fighting the evil, flying, capes, stopping time… What do these words have in common? One word: hero. What is heroism? I think heroism is when a character does an act that is extraordinary. Only the bravest, strongest yet considerate should posses such a quality characteristic. In the piece The Odyssey by Homer, the main character, Odysseus, possesses many features of a hero. I believe that he is a hero because of his bravery and his intelligence.
Odysseus is selfish, which is the opposite from what a true hero would do. For example, Odysseus takes his men to Scylla and six of his men are killed, and Odysseus didn't warn them about Scylla, which they would soon encounter. “Odysseus decides to tell the men only of Circe’s warning about the Sirens.”(Homer …show more content…

For example, Odysseus shows bravery when he fights Cyclops and protects his men. “...and rammed it deep in his crater eye.”(Homer 9. 291-292). Odysseus clearly shows that he wants to protect his men. He also steps up and takes action like a true hero would. Similarly, Odysseus shows bravery because instead of hiding he knows he needs to face the problem and fight Cyclops. “My heart sank low at the action, and drawing the sharp sword from my hip…” (Homer .204-205). Odysseus is a true hero for overcoming numerous, dangerous obstacles. He has faced many creatures and people who were dangerous, yet he still survived for ten years. If he wasn't such a great hero he wouldn't have survived the journey. Homer wouldn't make such a voyage showing all the dangerous encounters that Odysseus had to face if it weren't to show how much of a great hero he …show more content…

To illustrate, Odysseus uses the name “Nohbdy” when the Cyclops asks him for his name. “Nohbdy, Nohbdy’s tricked me, Nohbdy’s ruined me!” (Homer 9. 317). Odysseys was clever enough to say that his name is Nohbdy, because when other people came to ask who and what had happened all Cyclops all he says is Nohbdy, which sounds like nobody, so they assume nothing is wrong. Another reason he is considered intelligent is because of his ability to come back home to Ithaca and establish peace with the help of Athena and also unite with his family wich was the main goal of this long and dangerous journey. “Meanwhile, the townspeople, angry about the deaths of the young suitors, gather to fight Odysseus. In the end, Athena steps in and makes peace.” (Homer 23 94-96). Odysseus has clearly proven that nothing will stop him from getting home and that he will overcome any obstacle that is in his
