1. List the major obstacles to communications in the day-to-day work of a police agency and detail the major strategies you would use to overcome these obstacles.
The most common obstacles in the day-to-day communication of police agency are the following:
• Noise
• Time.
• Volume of information.
• Tendency to say what we think others want to hear.
• Certainty.
• Failure to select the best word.
• Prejudices (sender and receiver).
• Strained sender-receiver relationships.
In order to overcome these obstacles, I would be mindful of everyone’s time and focus on what being communicated, the channel of communication, and a timely delivery. I would focus on communicating clearly and openly to avoid rumors or the telephone game. I would do this by making sure I say what needs to be said with nothing more and nothing less. I would attempt to meet the needs of the receiver of the message. I would accomplished this by being selective in what I personally take action on and what I delegate.

As part of my HNC study, I have been asked to write a reflective account based on a particular incident where I overcame the barriers of communication with a service user. Effective communication is very important in all lines of work and especially criminal justice. Communicating effectively is often something that is taken for granted by many, until they are faced with the confusion of undetailed reports and misunderstandings. As stated by Joel Cox and Mike Milnor (2014), an inability to communicate effectively in police work is often an area of great concern. The documentation of members in the criminal justice world is of great importance, such as incident reports, police reports and even homicide cases. Often, the initial documents provided become a part of the larger case reports and may even end up in the hands of prosecuting attorneys.
Understanding the issue is just part of what’s needed. The purpose of the section is to identify a solution, or as may be the case, solutions. So, the question here is what can we do to improve the relationship between the police and the citizens. Over the years there has been many books written and studies conducted, all in an effort to find the best way to improve police and citizen relationships. To do this we must look at all available information. According to The Study Circles Resource Center’s Protecting Communities, Serving the Public: Police and residents building relationships to work together (2000), “Bring police and community together. We need to meet not just when there is a crisis or a big crime. We should do things to build relationships that are not so full of conflict. Then it would be easier to work together. We can build respect and trust for one another when we make time to meet with and learn about each other. This is the only way to do it.
Effective business communication is central to the success of an individual’s career and consequently to that of the overall business entity. It would be imaginable therefore that there is some form of correlation between effective communication skills and such success. To put this into context, University of Kent (2011) has placed Verbal Communication at the top of the ten skills that employers most commonly look for. On the same note, anything that hinders effective communication is bound to have a negative effect not only on the specific message delivery, but also on the overall success of a career. In this paper, some of the barriers to effective business communication are discussed, with a few examples of how they affect the process.
Good communication is essential to how well police officers interact with the public because it influences how the public responds to officers. Listening, speaking, writing and focusing on what others say are all ways officers can affect the way the public views them. A lack of these vital communications skills results in poor understanding, an officer not knowing how to proceed, and people who need police assistance giving up. Officers must also consider how communication might affect a community’s reaction. It is obvious that these traits are very important for optimal police work. Experiences show that people react more calmly and cooperatively when police officers treat them well. Therefore, good communication is needed in order to make the jobs of police officers easier and more positive.
Clearly, communication plays a significant role in every aspect of our life. Communication is the simply act of conveying information from one person to another by using voice (verbally), gesture or body language (nonverbally), books or magazines (written), pictures (visually). The better communication skills that one has is the better the information could be transferred and received. The ability to convey information successfully and clearly is a fundamental life skill and should not be underestimated. Additional, effectively communication is the key to solve problems in any situation. With good communication skills, you can absolutely improve your professional life as well as strengthen your social and family relation ship. Indeed, communication allows us to relate and understand each other. “It also provides us with a significant frame of reference and relational context that sustain our identities.” (Imberti, 2007)
I graduated from butte college in 1997 with an AS degree in Licensed vocational nursing. I later decided to further my education in nursing and returned to college, I graduated with an AS degree in Registered nursing in 2002 from butte college. I am currently attending Pacific college to earn my BSN degree. Right after I obtained my LVN license I went to worked at Oroville hospital, I worked for Oroville hospital for one year, then I decided to make a change and I went to work for California Forensic Medical Group which is a subcontracted company for the Butte County jail and I have been there ever since. I am married and have 4 boys and 2 dogs. In my spare time I love to ride my Harley.
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
