“Dream Big” some may say, but trying to reach that dream can be a disappointment. In “The house on mango street” it talks about mostly a neighborhood in which a lot of latinos live,they are trying to reach the american dream, but they go through many obstacles that stop them from reaching that dream.What is stopping people from reaching the american dream? Their is three main reasons that stop them from reaching the american dream. They are language,discrimination, and the biggest one poverty. First off,Language was a big problem In the house on mango street, There was a lady named mamacita. This guy saved all his money and worked two jobs to bring mamacita to the U.S. Mamacita couldn’t speak english, her son was learning english from the T.V. She was devastated that she couldn’t understand her own child. Mamacita wanted to go back to her own country. So this bring me to how you can see not speaking english can be a struggle when living in american and trying to reach the american dream. Another obstacle is discrimination. Another person in “The House On Mango Street” named Geraldo.He got into an accident and when he got to the hospital he didn’t have an ID. So they didn’t know who he was. In the House on mango Esperanza (The Narrator) Mother dropped out of school because since she didn’t have money she was ashamed of her clothes, as her mother said in the book"Shame is a bad thing, you know. It keeps you down." She wants to be able to watch ballet or a play, but they don’t have money for that.
