Do you know someone close to you who is affected by obesity? Most likely, that answer is yes. Obesity is a major common problem that America and countries all over the world face in today's society. Studies show that 33% of adults and 17% of children are affected by obesity in the U.S. (Scinta). This goes to show that anyone can be troubled with the issue. That's three of out of every ten adults and a little more than one out of every seven children that face obesity. It is a serious issue that could potentially lead to major health problems and diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and could lead to much worse if something is not done about it. Doctors say that being overweight means that a person’s weight is 10%-20% more than most average weight. The definition of being obese means that a person’s weight is anywhere above 20% more than average weight according to the BMI charts. These charts give information on “normal” weights depending on height. This “disease” can be influenced by many things but a person’s environment has a huge impact on his or her weight. America has a population of a whopping 326,474,013 people. More than one third of its adult population is thought to have an issue with obesity-some more extreme than others. When is enough, enough? They advertise with commercials and ads that appeal to the children to lure them to the product. Though it is effective, it is also very costly. These businesses actually spend millions every year on making and selling these advertisements. “Experts say it works: Children who see food ads consume 45 percent more food than children who don’t..” (“Unhealthy Food Should Not…”). Sounds accurate, right? Any kid would prefer the box of cereal with the cool tiger on the front over a plain old boring box. Regardless of the millions of dollars that the big businesses spend on making and putting ads out for others to see, they end up making a huge profit.
