Obamacare: The Future Of Healthcare

Recommended: 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses of our healthcare system

My first reason for supporting Obamacare is that there are now more consumer rights and protections for patients. Before Obamacare, patients could get taken advantage by insurance companies. If a child that had a condition like asthma or diabetes insurance companies turned them down. Under the new healthcare law, no American can be denied by an insurance company due to an illness or injury. Today there are approximately 17.6 million American children that have a pre existing health condition. Now they can all be covered and many lives could be saved (“Healthcare”). It is amazing that every American can get healthcare now, but what is the point if we do not know how to use it. Many Americans are clueless when it comes to healthcare. Obamacare will change that. If a state applies for the new healthcare law, they can establish offices to help consumers become more educated about healthcare. Healthcare is a wonderful thing to have for you and your family, but it will go to waste assuming we do not understand it. In fact with the new law, insurance companies must put their information online allowing consumers to compare the prices of different companies side by side. Obamacare provides you with all the information you need to become more educated about healthcare (“Features of Healthcare”). Another feature about Obamacare is to increase access to healthcare. If you are already insured you can get a bundle of new consumer benefits. If you are not insured you can enroll in Medicaid if you are low income. If you have a high income you can get health insurance through an exchange for a better price than with a private insurance company (Tate 17-18).     The topic that I am choosing to do is on Obama Care. I chose this topic because the idea of the government forcing people to obtain insurance is wrong in my eyes. I am interested in analyzing the validity for what has been said about this topic in order to increase my understanding about Obama Care. I am not an expert when it comes to Obama Care. I know that this is an insurance that is being provided through the government for the general public. I have read that President Obama never initially read the whole bill itself. I also know that people who cannot afford it, but make too much money to qualify for Medicaid are being heavily encouraged to get this insurance. It also seems as though that the insurance being offered is pretty generic in terms of coverage.     First and foremost is the fact that it has provided upwards of 32 million Americans with some type of health insurance coverage. With the passing of the law, all insurance companies are now required to cover ten essential health benefits, including but not limited to mental health, addiction and chronic diseases. This saves money because these are the very people that would end up in the emergency room for treatment if they do not have access to healthcare. It has removed the stigma of preexisting conditions and now ensures insurance companies will no longer be able to deny coverage because of medical conditions and the insured can no longer be dropped or experience increased premiums should they develop a catastrophic illness. The lifetime and annual limits on coverage were eliminated which will help those who encounter tragic injury or illness; possibly preventing them from bankrupting themselves trying to pay for life saving measures. Children can now remain on their parent’s policy up to the age of 26. This alone has supplied around 3 million people with insurance coverage that they didn’t previously have (Shaffer, 2013). Health care reform gave each individual state the opportunity (although not all exercised this right) and option to expanded Medicaid rosters, making the threshold 138% of the Federal poverty level (Chang & Davis, 2013).
