Nyjah Huston is the middle child of five kids in a family of seven. “He was the youngest skateboarder to compete in the X games at age 11 and got his first sponsor at age 7! He won the overall champ title of SLS (street league skateboarding) in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2017. But most people don't know his background and how hard his childhood was. With an abusive father and divorced parents, his struggles were a lot for young Nyjah. He was born at home(so were all his siblings) on November 30th 1994 in Davis, California. He has two older brothers, a younger brother, and a younger sister. He began swimming at the age of nine for safety reasons. In light of, a swim coach saw the capacity he exhibited and asked if he wanted to join the swim team for competitive swimmers. In a matter of time, Jarrod was moving up in the levels of the competitive swim club. It was only a matter of 3 years that he moved up to the final level which is exceptionally well since he was a fifth grader in a high school level. To the present he only swims for high school and has made state every year so far. During his sophomore year Jarrod won second in the 200 IM in the state of Oklahoma for 5a
The athlete I chose is Natasha Watley. She is a professional softball player and the first African-American female to play on the USA softball team in the Olympics. She’s a former collegiate 4-time First Team All-American who played for the UCLA Bruins, the USA Softball Women’s National Team, and for the USSSA Pride. She helped the Bruins will multiple championships and also holds numerous records and one of the few players to bat at least .400 with 300 hits, 200 runs, and 100 stolen bases. She’s also the career hits leader in the National Pro Fast pitch. She won the gold medal in the 2004 summer Olympics and a silver in the Beijing Olympics. She was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

His parents did not have enough money to let him go to the skateparks everyday, so his dad made him a ramp in the driveway. (Mortier page#) They were always encouraging him to follow his dreams. He was hard on himself and expected himself to do so many things because of his dedication to the sport. His frustration became such an issue his parents had him psychologically evaluated at school. He moved up to the fourth grade but realized it was too much for him. Most people wait for others to help cause change for their communities not many people are like Sybil Haydel Morial, a New Orleans native who decide that she shall not wait for someone else to decide to take a stand. Just like Martin Luther King Jr, she had a vision for change and for all people to have the same experiences, not separate but equal. Even though her family was middle class, she still experience oppression because even though her family was well accomplished and had status, the world still saw them as African Americans. At a young age, Morial was uncomfortable with how African-Americans were treated and portrayed by her white counterparts. Just like her parents she decided to part take in helping and create services for others.
Eminem was born in St. Jospeh, Missouri as Marshall Mathers III. Growing up, Eminem frequently moved between Missouri and Michigan. As a teenager he finally settled in Michigan which is where he discovered rapping. Eminem began battle rapping with a friend from high school. The audience was majority African-American and did not accept him as a rapper at first. As he continued to rap he proved himself and joined a few rap groups. The most well-known of these rap groups was D-12. After the release of his first album, Infinite, Eminem developed his alter ego Slim Shady. He then created The Slim Shady EP which created many opportunities for Eminem, jump starting his career. He obtained a contract with Interscope Records and was introduced to Dr. Dre who became his mentor. His first album with Interscop Records was The Slim Shady LP in 1999 followed by The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000. Tony Hawk was born May 12, 1968. When Tony Hawk was young, he had many skateboarding injuries. According to Matt Scheff, “Tony was often covered in bruises and scrapes. He fell so hard he lost teeth four different times” (11). At nine years old Hawks brother gave him a skateboard that had been used before. “Tony Hawk was age nine when his older brother gave him a blue fiberglass skateboard, chipped, and scratched from years of use” ( britannica). Tony also experienced lots of fame throughout his life. Before Hawk was twenty, “He won virtually every skateboarding competition, he entered, and before he was twenty, he was considered to be number one skateboarder in the world” (britannica). Also like any other teenager Tony got into a lot of trouble, “ He was very bright, with an IQ of 144, but he was also frustrated and unfocused, and would frequently fly into rages" (britannica).
Michael Jordan was born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. Jordan's family moved to moved to Wilmington, North Carolina while he was young along with his three siblings. He attended Ogden Elementary School, and later Trask Junior High School. Jordan attended Emsley A. Laney High School, where he anchored his athletic career by playing baseball, football, and basketball ("Michael Jordan" Wikipedia). When jordan was twelve, he played with his local baseball team called the Babe Ruth All-stars. Jordan helped his team win there championship (Mattern 79).
