23 September 2015 Nutrition in Childcare Facilities To keeps your body alive and healthy there are six important nutrients it needs. If too much or too little of these nutrients are obtained then it can cause problems, you need more of some and less of other (Gregson.11). It is important for child care facilities to provide proper nutrition for children because it affects their health and behavior, nutrition plays a vital role in a child's development and for some children this is the only meal they will receive.

Surveys have shown that one out of four school aged children have to take vitamin and mineral supplements (Dietz. 58). The meals children eat should provide certain vitamins and minerals so this is not necessary. There are six important nutrients your body needs for you to be healthy. The six nutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. All of these nutrients provide energy for your body except for vitamins and minerals, instead vitamins and minerals but they take part in helping your body use the energy (Gregson.11). Vitamins are very important and are in most food, they help your blood clot and are in most food that are good for you. Vitamins A, D, E and K help to keep your bones and teeth from getting brittle. Vitamin C help to fight off infections and are is found in things high in protein like meat, whole grains, peanut butter and eggs (Gregson. 17). Minerals are meant to keep your body's fluids balanced, the three important minerals your body needs are calcium, iron and zinc (Gregson.18). If a child is missing any of these vital vitamins or minerals their growth and development is impacted because some stop kids from getting sick, keep their bones strong, especially zinc which is needed for children to grow and helps with sexual development
