Leadership can be exhibited by many different personalities and characteristics and is defined by Porter and O’Grady (2013) as the ability to influence others through developing relationships and focusing on people to collectively achieve goals that align with their organization. Developing the skills to lead others is an ongoing process that requires self-awareness and evaluation in order to build the techniques to improve one’s leadership ability (Porter and O’Grady, 2013). 37). Transformational leaders work to inspire others to excel and often assume a mentor role to encourage others to reach their full potential (Giltinane, 2013). Often adopting a democratic approach, transformational leaders believe that others work well when they share in the responsibility of the organization and can develop self-sufficiency (Giltinane, 2013). Democratic leaders offer guidance instead of controlling others, and make suggestions or ask questions to elicit further thought and exploration, rather then dictating orders. I speak with the family and/ or friends, offering comfort for the passing of a loved one and helping them through the next steps. Vitello-Cicciu (2002) explain, “the ability to manage one’s emotion requires that nurse leaders recognize the emotion and use it to solve a problem” (p. 208). Following the death of a patient there are many emotions such as sadness, frustration, and anxiety.
