Nursing Leadership Assignment

Social media platforms, such as Twitter, allow for the sharing of information and interaction between individuals in an online setting (Betton & Tomlinson, 2013). In this paper, I will discuss a leadership assignment that required me to establish a social media network and engage with others online. I will provide a brief overview of how I went about setting up my social network, discuss what I learned about leadership in completing this assignment, and highlight some benefits and potential challenges of utilizing social media as a health care professional (HCP).
I began building my network by searching particular local and international health related news networks where I could retrieve the latest happenings in health. From there, I looked toward key political players such as Justin Trudeau, Donald Trump, and Brad Wall as these individuals and the policies that they support have an impact on the health of the population. Following these individuals also gave me insight into general public perceptions of current political policies. This idea was reinforced through the completion of an assignment that required me to establish a social media presence to engage with others. In developing my social media network, I discovered challenges related to publically sharing my personal views, however, found benefits in consuming information and varying perspectives for the purpose of informing myself. By completing this assignment, I have reflected on several benefits and potential challenges that the use of social media may present to a HCP.
