Informatics is the science of how to use data, information, and knowledge to improve human health and the delivery of health care services (AMIA, 2011). Informatics technology is found in a surplus of different fields, such as teaching, banking, engineering, healthcare, etc. Processing data and turning it into information are vital concepts that Nurses use in their daily work routine, a concept that is now recognized as Nursing Informatics (NI). NI is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice. The director must be a licensed Registered Nurse with a bachelor’s degree and preferably a master’s degree in nursing. To hold a position in this field it requires interpersonal and managerial skills. A nurse director supervises the entire community of nurses for the facility and works through the behaviors of the nurses in helping the patient population admitted within the medical facility. It is the responsibility of the director to inform and regulate the nursing staff on the new policies and procedures of the facility in accordance with the Joint Commission of Health (JCOH) and the Department of Health (DOH). The director is also responsible for making sure the medical equipment is up to date and well stocked for the effective care of the patient population. A major task performed by the nurse director is to analyze the performance of nurses in the care given to the patients. Collecting data on rates of infection spread by Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI), Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI), Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers (HAPU), patient injury related to falls and safety are information collected and analyzed by the director. The information is gathered from the Electronic Medical Records and the data is studied to understand the causes and ways to make improvements. Each day new developments are created and as time progresses new concepts are generated to fit the needs of society. It is important to have an understanding of technology and its uses as it plays an important role in education. According to Darvish (2014), “due to the fast development of technology, in order to effectively take advantage of information technology in nursing outcome and quality of health care and to empower nurses; educational arrangement is recommended to set short-term and long- term specialized courses.” It is important to train and educate the nurses about technology in order to reap the full potential benefits that will be used in the novice to expert field of nursing. Darvish’s (2014) study also suggests how, “informatics competence is a prerequisite to improving patient care”. Information technology can help to organize staffing concerns and create positive patient outcomes. According to Pierce (2003), “Internet-based nurse scheduling systems are designed according to self-scheduling model that need refining by the manager who overviews proper distribution, it causes uniform resource allocation in scheduling and increases patient direct care time”. Information from electronic health databases must be generated and stored away so that nurse directors can review and gain access at any time.
