A problem or issue from within my specialty that I feel needs to be improved on is empowering patients to participate more in exercise to lower their blood cholesterol level to treat hyperlipidemia. This issue of leading a sedentary lifestyle has a detrimental effect on one's life, and especially on one's cardiovascular health. This issues relates to the area of family nurse practitioner, because my plan after graduation is to work in the primary care setting. Working as a primary care provider, treating hyperlipidemia is a common practice that will be seen by all providers, and involves patients from all different stages in life. With the number of people being diagnosed with hyperlipidemia, and at younger ages, the effects of exercise
How does this history of high blood pressure demonstrate the problem description and etiology components of the P.E.R.I.E. process? What different types of studies were used to establish etiology or contributory cause?
As a result of urbanization and improving living status, the prevalence of obesity increased at an alarming level and it considered a major health problem (AlNohair 2014). Adult from twenty to forty years were the focus of health promotion activities in this assignment to reduce the risk of obesity. HP interventions focused on empowering the adult population to develop their own healthy choices regarding healthy food. It has a major role in enhancing the health condition of adults with high risk of obesity through implementing Tannahill’s model. Tannahill’s model used to guide, structure health promotion activities, nurses are responsible to provide health promotion through implementing of this model and use health education, prevention and
It also offers physical, psychological and social environment. Health Promotion is considered as a philosophy, multispectral and socio-cultural technique that purpose to promote the health and wellbeing of persons and communities through health education, supportive environments and so on. The educator role of the APHN and NP includes health education within a nursing framework and professional nurse educator roles. The APHN analyzes groups at risk within a community and implements health education interventions. The APHN and NP boost wellness and contribute to conserving and advocating health by teaching the importance of a healthy lifestyle, stress management, physical exercise, and good nutrition. They educate about disease processes and the importance of following treatment systems. In addition, they provide guidance and educate clients on the use of birth control methods, diet, medications, and other therapeutic procedures. They also counsel groups, families, clients, and the community on the importance of assuming responsibility for their own
In adults with a new diagnosis of hyperlipidemia in the outpatient setting, what is the significance of receiving standardized education on the recommended amount of exercise and participating in exercise on cholesterol levels?
Just like any novice APN I would tend to be more focused on the clinical domain. Coaching and educating patients and family will be important to effect change in their lifestyle to be more compliant with the treatment plan. As we all know a patient’s care is not confined to nursing care but involves the other disciplines; doctors, therapist, social worker, nursing assistant, dietician, pharmacist, etc. and thus the importance of collaboration. Advocating for patient also requires expert communications skills and collaboration. As I continue with my journey to become an Advanced Practice Nurse, I hope to develop all attributes starting with the expert communication to the level where I can advocate for my patient’s needs in the health policy arena. I would also like to work on self-confidence. I know self-confidence comes in time with knowledge and experience. I believe that patients develop trust and confidence when they see confidence of their healthcare
...smoking, high cholesterol diet, age, gender, sedentary lifestyle, contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. Nurses can fill significant treatment gaps in the risk factor management of patient with coronary heart disease. “Cardiac rehabilitation programs including nursing education exert a beneficial effect on patients’ quality of life, exercise capacity, lipid profile, body mass index, body weight, blood pressure, resting heart rate, survival rate, mortality rate and decreased myocardial infarction risk factors.” ( Health Science Journal, 2012). Healthcare professionals should discuss with the patients therapeutic lifestyle changes, emphasizing the role of diet in heart disease. Nurses should provide information and teaching about medications to lower cholesterol levels and also discuss the relationship between diabetes, hypertension and CAD.

...revention through awareness and education is achieved via the work of government initiatives such as the National Diabetes Services Scheme and health campaigns including Measure Up. The NDSS also works to improve the self-management of diabetes. Physiotherapists also have a role in the management of diabetes through implementing exercise programs. An evidence-based approach was used to create the proposed exercise program that aimed to manage the high blood glucose levels associated with insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes (Sigal et al., 2007). It utilized both aerobic and resistance training in accordance with current knowledge of the most effective dosages for the population group. Physiotherapists must work alongside other healthcare professionals such as dietitians and general practitioners to provide optimal support and management for patients with diabetes.
The career of a registered nurse is one of the most interesting professions in the medical field, because not only do they help to improve the health of their patients, they also help their patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Registered nurses work to promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness. Their job is to help patients get their health back on track, and prevent increased visits to the physician. When providing care directly to the patient, they observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress. They do this to see where the patient’s health stands and prevent further illness or health problems if such occurs. Registered Nurses help to develop and manage nursing plans, and instruct the patient and their
As an ARNP, working closely with obese children, within an outpatient setting, the interviewee acknowledged both autonomy and collaboration. Although her practiced is primarily in a clinic setting, the practitioner also holds hospital privileges. After practicing in the healthcare system for over 30 years, in varying roles and areas, this ARNP considered herself accepted, as a professional, by both nursing and medical personnel. She also concluded that the physicians she routinely works aside, ask her for advice.
Since Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common health challenges world-wide, I am going to further incorporate the topic in my paper. Through academic research and resources, in my first paragraph I will be providing the health promotion definition along with expressing the importance for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. My second paragraph will display the pathophysiology to help comprehend how this health challenge is present in the body. Health promotion interventions will also be incorporated with ideas and specific information to aid individuals in promoting health and preventing development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Based on our assessment of Talbot County, Georgia, we believe the following two community nursing diagnoses are valid for members of the community: physical inactivity related to lack of knowledge as manifested by Talbot County’s obesity rate of 34.7% and physical inactivity related to limited community resources as manifested by lack of safe exercise facilities, sidewalks and parks with walking trails. While both community nursing diagnoses are pertinent to Talbot County, we believe physical inactivity related to lack of knowledge as manifested by Talbot County’s obesity rate of 34.7% would be given the first priority. Without any understanding of the importance of physical activity community resources may not be utilized. Therefore, educating the community on the importance of physical activity cannot be stressed enough. Based on a study conducted, knowledge deficits were linked to a lack of physical activity in socially disadvantaged communities (Clark, 1998). Unfortunately, rural communities tend to have lower education levels (Clark, 1998). Rural Georgians are less likely than their counterparts to complete high school or to complete a bachelor’s degree (Vinson, 2013). In Talbot County, only 47.2% of the population graduated from high school, 20.6% had some college or an associate’s degree, and only 5.1% had a bachelor’s degree (Vinson, 2013). Also contributing to the lack of knowledge on the importance of physical activity is limited community health resources to facilitate adequate health education on lifestyle activities that promote physical activity within Talbot. Talbot County’s Health Department consists of only one nurse daily and a nurse practitioner who is only available on...
The office of disease prevention and health promotion is the organization I have chosen for this this assignment. This organization has several issues they address, but I have chosen health literacy and communication due its relevance to all individuals/humans. Although, disease is presents itself in several forms good health is what we desire, because no one’s goal is to suffer from any form of health altering condition.
The World Health Organization (WHO) (2010) defines obesity and being overweight as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Body mass index (BMI) as Arterburn et al (2008) put forward is a measure of body fat based on height and weight and further suggest that any individual with a BMI of more than 30 is considered as obese. WHO (1986) defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Tannahill et al (1999) propound that health education could be viewed as communication activity aimed at enhancing positive health and preventing ill health in individuals and groups by influencing their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour of persons with power and of the community. Butler et al (2008) defines health prevention as the measures for early detection of departure from good health. Whereas Heath (2002) concur that the role and function of the nurse emphasise on health promotion and illness prevention, the Department of Health (2003) emphasises on th...
