According to Greek Mythology, Nike was the winged goddess or spirit of victory, both in battle and peaceful competition. The supernatural being was a common figure in ancient Greek art, appearing in sculptures, on pottery, and on coins. Her appearance fit the description as ‘beautiful- ankled Nike’, because she was described with wings and was always carried before her wreath of victory, which she offered either to other gods or to prize-winning heroes and athletes. Like the inspirational Nike in the Bronze Age, Nike of the twentieth century is footwear that motivates the world's top athletes to new levels of mastery and success. The Nike “swoosh”, created in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, represents the spirit of the winged goddess who inspired the most brave and noble warriors at the beginning of evolution.
Nationally respected track and field coach at the University of Oregon, Bill Bowerman, was constantly trying to find different ways to give his runners an edge over their competition. He tried different track tops, re-hydration drinks, and searched extremely hard for new enhancements in running shoes. Unfortunately, well-known footwear producers of the 1950’s ignored the designs he tried to suggest to them at first, so Bowerman began put together shoes for his runners on his own.
Talented middle- distance runner, Phil Knight from Portland, Oregon enrolled in the fall of 1955 at Oregon and competed for Bill Bowerman’s track program. Other than graduating from Oregon, Knight earned his MBA in finance from Stanford University, where he wrote a paper that suggested quality running shoes could be industrialized in Japan that would contend with other well-known German brands, like Adidas. However, his letters went unreturned from manuf...

...o accustomed to. Like Michael Jordan, I am very satisfied with my choice of being a huge fan of the Nike brand. In many ways, Nike has a big influence on my life. The idea of Nike fills my mind with many confident thoughts. Nike gear makes me feel like a mighty warrior of the Bronze Age. When I am draped in Nike gear, I feel extremely confident and victorious. I feel as if I deserve to be handed a wreath of victory such as the one the Greek goddess would offer to champion heroes and Olympians. This brand is very inspiring and motivating to me because of its history. The history of Nike says it all. After doing my research on Nike, it makes so much sense why the brand has become such a success. The hard work, dedication, and patience that Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight displayed to achieve their dreams really motivates me to one day become just as successful.

Bowerman was born in Portland, Oregon in 1911. He went to the University of Oregon where he studied physical education, wrote a best seller about running, and from 1949 to 1972, coached his alma mater into becoming a top-tier school for track and field. Bowerman was known for always demanding the highest effort from his athletes; he would demand the athletes to run three times a day. The Oregon coach always tried to be at the cutting edge of technology by designing better track surfaces, improved training, and, most importantly, developed the obsession for lightweight, high quality running shoes. Because of his constant desire to have the best shoe out there, he was able to innovate the running shoe industry, which had still relied on designs from fifty years ago, and developed the Waffle Racer, on which all running shoes are still based on. Yet as innovative as the shoe was, had Nike not had his former steeplechaser, Phil Knight, marketing the shoe, none of this would have mattered and casual runners today most likely would be still wearing canvas shoes.
Since its creation, Nike has proven itself as a popular brand and it has created niches by selling products such as footwear, apparels and various types of sports equipment. This paper will attempt to trace the product development of Nike shoes from its origins in conception and design to the manufacturing and production process located in contract factories in developing countries to advertising and marketing of Nike as a cultural commodity and finally, the retailing of the footwear around the world.
The reason behind the huge success of Nike is Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan is one of the most iconic athletes in the history of sports. He was the definition of dominance during his time. One of the best decisions of Jordan’s life would have to be signing with Nike. He single handedly made Nike one of most known brands in the world. Even being able to launch his own shoe brand with Nike. A question that might be asked about Jordan could be “What if Jordan didn’t sign with Nike”.

The company changed the name to Nike, which is Greek word meaning victory, in 1972 after producing a good brand of shoes that became popular among the athletes (NIKE, Inc., 2001). Since then, the company has been successful, dominating the world market of athletic shoes. The company’s products are sold in more than 170 countries across the world. The company also sponsors various sports events at national and international levels. The company slogan “just do it” is catchy and attract many people tom buying its products. This makes the company to grow continuously due to wide and stable customer base.
Nike’s goal is to remain unique and different from others in terms of the items offered on the market. Arguably, Nike belongs to a monopolistically competitive market as there only a few organizations with the ability to regulate the amount charged for their product which means they cannot make their prices high as this is likely to make customers move on to other available choices (Nike, Inc., 2012). However, Nike can find a balance between the prices to charge for their products and remaining competitive with other companies in the industry. Nike has formed a distinction between the appearance and performance of their footwear and that of their competitors. Although products are differentiated from other companies, they still influence each other because they are items of the same
It’s because when I sport the Nike swoosh, I feel as if I representing the Nike brand and the beautiful, driven, fit women I see in their advertisements. Feeling this way gives me the inspiration and confidence to play my best. I feel as if I identify with the women in the advertisements by wearing Nike. “The relationship between persons and the product remains one of the most crucial signifiers within advertisements. Persons in advertisements supply the consumer with a certain identification frame—whether the person is presented as a user or is presented within a lifestyle setting, the viewer is invited to identify him/herself with the presented person.” 202 Brand Culture. The Nike brand does a great job at doing this to their consumers to create brand loyalty. Nike brand users, just like myself, see the athletes using the brands and feel a certain connection to them. Brand loyalty should not only be a goal for brands because of the benefit of having their logo advertised on consumers who fit within their target market, but also for PRICE SOMETHING ECONOMY
...oddess of victory, a company of highest ideal was born. As depicted in The Nike of Samothorace and Nike Adjusting Her Sandal, honor and achievement were of highest importance to the Ancient Greeks. The victory Nike brought the Greeks in the war with the titans is analogous to the victories our athletes bring us in the Olympic games. The vibrant spirit of the ancient goddess has bridged the gap between centuries, and proved itself as the paramount shoe company. The Nike Swoosh embodies the vitality of the winged goddess who brought inspiration to the most courageous and chivalrous warriors at the dawn of civilization .

Nike Inc. was founded in 1962 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight as a partnership under the name, Blue Ribbon Sports. There are as many brands as there is ants in the world, but the two brands that pop out are adidas and nike. Those two brands have been going head to head for ages to see who is the better brand. It’s been tested, compared, and debated which brand is better. Whether it’s the quality of the materials or the cost of it, the debate is ongoing. Both brands have been fighting for the top ever since they were both created and I don’t blame them it’d be fantastic to be the best brand in the world. When Nike and adidas are contrasted, it becomes clear that the Adidas brand are better for the overall consumer and enhances sport performance than Nike.
