What would you do if you were removed from your home and taken to a strange new place? Night by Elie Wiesel is a true story about his life during World War II, where he learns how to have courage and never give up during his struggles. Night is a great autobiography to read because of its descriptive settings, fascinating characters, and true historical plot.
This book takes place during World War II in Hungarian Transylvania and in different concentration camps. The story begins at Eliezer’s home which is an apartment in a town called Sighet. Other settings in the book are the different concentration camps where Eliezer and his father are prisoners. In every location, Eliezer learns how to survive and grows more into a man.
All the people in the book are real humans that Elie met. The author Eliezer is the main character. During the time of the book, he is a teenage Jewish boy who studies the Torah and the cabbala. Eliezer’s father, Shlomo, thought Elie was too young to study the Torah and the cabbala so Elie secretly learned them with Moshe the Beadle, a poor man who worked at the synagogue. Shlomo faced the same experiences as Eliezer but didn’t get to see freedom again. Elie also had three sisters and his mother who were alive at the beginning of the story. All of these real people have an important part in this story.
When Germany occupied Hungary in 1944, all the Jewish people within Sighet were forced to live in ghettos. Later, they were all stuffed into cattle cars for many days and nights without any food or water and sent to Auschwitz. ...d was how to cope during extremely hard times and struggles. Elie was only 16 when he lost all of his family. How tragic that would be to have everyone you’ve known and loved your whole life just taken from you. I have lost two close people in my life so I know how it feels to lose somebody. However, I could never imagine losing my whole family all around one time in such an awful and cruel way. I find it very encouraging how even after all he went through Wiesel continued on with his life and taught others about his experiences.
Eliezer was very brave and strong for overcoming the holocaust and the terrible memories. I find learning about the holocaust very intriguing. This real life autobiography was a good historic story with its real life people, descriptive setting, and historical plot. I learned some more about World War II and the holocaust through this book.
