Nick Vujicic and Overcoming Obstacles

Try to envision being born without any hands or feet, arms or legs and given no warning or medical reason or explanation for having that congental anomaly. Now picture how you would live if you could not walk, do daily tasks, such as feeding yourself, brushing your teeth, going to the bathroom on your own, or writing, etc. I am sure you could only imagine the countless number of obstacles and challenges Nick faced just with things like life skills on a daily basis. However, Nick has overcome what most people would say is absolutely impossible, and he is now traveling world wide sharing his testimony, and he gives God all of the credit for his strength to do this.
The first theme I chose to focus on was freedom. I chose this simply because of the fact that he uses this word repeatedly throughout his book. I thought this was a great theme because he constantly talks about how you cannot and should not let yourself get bogged down worrying about what other people think about you or how other people perceive you. Nick believes that you are in control of you and only you, and if other people do not accept you for who you are, then that is on them and that is their problem. Nick says that people must stop trying to live up to everyone else’s expectations. He also says that we have to stop these negative attitudes, despite what our circumstances are, and we have to stop the nonsense of thinking we are not “good enough.” I chose the image of a person who has different paths in front of them to choose from. I chose this to depict that everyone always has options no matter what their circumstances are. ...ly have several modifications I would need to implement, but I would also need to create a real sense of community in my classroom, so everyone felt safe and comfortable.
Although I have only had two brief encounters with my friend from EFR, the insights I have had from reading this book link to my experiences with her because like Nick, she is unique. She may have a disability, but she is still very talented in other ways. Learning things like math may not necessarily come easy to her, but she is very creative and artistic! After reading this novel, I came to realize that everyone is unique, and everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and we as teachers need to be aware of that, and really try to focus on our students’ strengths so we can help build them up to a place where they can feel confident and accepted in the school and community as a whole.
