Do you ever wonder why citizens commit crimes? Recently, there has been a study that has been discovered called neurocriminology. Neurocriminology is the study of a criminal’s brain, it shows the reasons behind why they commit crimes. Neurocriminology is specifically a mix of biocriminology, criminology, and psychology. To be more specific, neurocriminology is "an emerging subdiscipline of biocriminology and criminology in general, which applies brain imaging techniques and principles from neuroscience to understand, predict and prevent crime."(“Neurocriminology.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, 17 Aug. 2017, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurocriminology.) They still committed the crime and need to pay the time. If that were to happen the convicts who did not know what they were doing would be sent to prison and have to fend for themselves. There would be no way to help correct their biological obstacle that made them this way. If they are not treated as soon as they are released, they will just repeat the cycle because they were never taught what is right and what is wrong. When they do not know the difference between right or wrong it is like they need to be reprogrammed to understand what is right or wrong. The relationship between social harm and criminology has been discussed all around the world within different approaches. Some criminologists such as Hillyard and Tombs, believe to be a better alternative to the concept of crime, due to the fact that involves a lack of more harmful issues that go unpunished in our society, others disagree saying that, actions can only be penalized within communities if they are seen as a crime. Criminology is the scientific study of the causes and prevention of crimes. Criminology also uses a vast amount of theories to explain peoples’ actions, mental state, and their drive for committing crimes. Some crimes have monetary benefits, while other crime are committed in revenge or in spite of another, which would be called crimes of passion. Because it can be sometime difficult to understand why certain crime are committed, the only thing we can do is use theories to better decipher thoughts, morals, and reasons behind committing crimes.
There would need to be staff trained to identify underlying problems, treat the problems, and supervise the offenders while they are in the recovery phase of the correction process. If the offender is allowed to work on the issues which cause the criminal actions while remaining in society they would benefit in not having to readjust once they left the prison environment. This would be accomplished through more community corrections and probation.
For decades researchers have speculated about the relationship between levels of violence, and societal conditions such as poverty, urbanism, population composition, and family disruption. National and international level research has concluded that each of these factors are related to crime rates and their trends overtime (Avison & Loring, 1986; Lafree, 1999, Lauristen & Carbone-Lopez, 2011). To examine these factors more closely we should recognize that they are the foundation of many criminological theories, both motivational and control, applied to the macro and individual level. Specifically, these include social disorganization theory (Shaw & MCkay, 1942), anomie-strain theory (Merton, 1968), violent subcultural theories (Anderson, 1999), social bond theory (Hirschi, 1969), self-control theory (Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1990), and biosocial perspectives (Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1983).
Criminology as a genre is defined as the scientific study of crime, as well as its causes, law enforcement interaction, criminal behavior, and means of prevention. In its own way criminology is the history of humanity. As long as people have been on earth there has been criminal activity. Much like most other work atmospheres, it was a male dominated field. A woman seeking to work in criminology was unheard of. Men filled the jobs as police officers, lawyers, judges, and politicians. However, in the 1860s Belva Lockwood became determined to pave the way for women in criminology. As a women’s rights activist, she became one of the most influential women in criminology.
This is especially terrible knowing that once that person serves the time that was offered rather than the time they deserve they’ll be out committing more crimes. They may not even learn their lesson not to commit that or any crime at all again, and some may say that no matter how much time you give someone they may never change their mind and still be the same, although this may be true, the longer the punishment the more time they’re in a place where they’re isolated hopefully giving them time to think about what they’ve done, and prisons aren’t a great place so they’d most likely not want to come back, the longer they’d stay the more they’d see the horrible conditions. The definition of Criminology is the scientific study of crime, as a social phenomenon of criminals, and penalty treatment (Collins English Dictionary 2014). Criminology is the basis of the criminal justice system, it aids with assessing criminals and punishing them justly within the justice system. One key question that should be asked is the justice system allowing criminals to get away by pleading insane, mental, or saying that they weren’t in control of their body. This paper will look at specific examples of the relationship between neuroscience and the criminology and the law in our societies. The abuse of different types of drugs and alcohol over time will have negative side effects on your brain and body as a whole. This will create medical conditions for individuals, resulting in them being used as an excuse to break the law and get away. This cannot be said about all situations, there is the exception where the medical condition of an individual had nothing to do with his or her past actions. Yet, offenders still tend to get of the charges they acquired with a slap on a wrist if their lawyer can twist their story to make it seem it wasn’t completely their fault, and it is more so to base on the medical condition the offender posses or possessed. This important controversy on neuroscience with its relation to criminology and legal studies should receive more attention and awareness. It can have a big impact on our legal and justice system, and how cases and crime will be assessed and prosecuted. Yet at the same time there have been studies conducted, that prove that you can’t make a direct coloration between the brain and the actions an individual chooses to commit.
There has always been a fascination with trying to determine what causes an individual to become a criminal? Of course a large part of that fascination has to do with the want to reduce crime, and to determine if there is a way to detect and prevent individuals from committing crime. Determining what causes criminality is still not perfectly clear and likewise, there is still debate as to whether crime is caused biologically, environmentally, or socially. Furthermore, the debate is directly correlated to the notion of 'nurture vs nature'. Over time many researchers have presented various theories pertaining to what causes criminal behavior. There are many theories that either support or oppose the concept of crime being biological rather than a learned behavior.
Predicting and preventing crime is surely better than its counterpart: reacting and stopping crime after the fact. One surefire way to get an idea of who will commit the crimes is to cross reference traits and demographics of already imprisoned criminals, hoping for clear cut trends that they could use to reasonably forecast future criminals. Over time, with enough evidence and data, it would be possible to predict and prevent crimes by looking at the factors that produce criminal thought processes and intervene appropriately. It is important to note that biology is not destiny, no trend or pattern is perfect enough to allow for 100% certainty. In today’s society, one will find that there are many different factors that go into the development of a criminal mind, and it is impossible to single out one particular cause of criminal behavior. Criminal behavior often stems from both biological and environmental factors. In many cases criminals share similar physical traits which the general population do not usually have. For example criminals have smaller brains than properly adjusted individuals. However biological reasons cannot solely be the cause of criminal behavior. Therefore, one must look to other sources as to how a criminal mind is developed. Social and environmental factors also are at fault for developing a person to the point at which they are lead to committing a criminal act. Often, someone who has committed a violent crime shows evidence of a poorly developed childhood, or the unsuitable current conditions in which the subject lives. In addition if one studies victimology which is the role that the victim plays in the crime, it is apparent that there are many different causes for criminal behavior. Through the examination of biological factors, in addition to the social and environmental factors which make up a criminal mind, one can conclude that a criminal often is born with traits common to those of criminals, it is the environment that exist around them that brings out the criminal within them to commit indecent acts of crime.
