Neonatal Surgeon A neonatal surgeon’s job is to diagnose conditions in newborns afterbirth including breathing problems, infections and birth defects. As a neonatal surgeon, your job is to provide care to newborns and premature babies with major health issues and manage their healthcare. Last year around the end of May, I began watching the television show Grey’s Anatomy. I instantly became addicted I love the medical talk also the drama. Caring for your patient and trying to help them get better again was something that interest me very much. Applicant must obtain a medical doctor degree and have or be enrolled in a three-year residency program in general pediatrics. Applicant must provide medical school performance evaluation and medical school transcript. Applicant must be a US citizen or have permanent residency. Being a neonatal surgeon, you work all kinds of hours. Neonatal surgeons mostly are always on call meaning being able to be contacted to come to work at any time when needed. As a neonatal surgeon throughout the day, you will go on rounds. Rounds are when you present the medical problems and treatments of a patient to an audience consisting of doctor’s residents and medical students. Neonatal surgeons perform surgeries on babies who have serious health conditions so they could be in surgery quite a bit. Their patient’s infant could have prenatal asphyxia (A lack of oxygen during the birth process leaving to multiple problems that you see your kidney failure heart failure and so on.), congenital defects or birth defects (abnormalities of development such as congested heart defects brain malformation in gastrointestinal malformation) and pneumonia, meningitis or generalize infections in the blood (sepsis). They don’t require different training you just have to have a lot of experience. You will have addition duties because you have to be extremely careful and healthy. The babies will need more attention than other babies. It depends if you need it or not some people take it to be on the safe side.
In the society we currently live in today, medical careers are a vital factor regarding the well-being of citizens in the United States. Neonatal nurses make up a very small part of this field, but still play a huge role. Our population depends on neonatal nurses, for the reason that they assist newborns, who were just brought into this world, in becoming stable and healthy. Evidently, in order to become a neonatal nurse, a particular education is required. In addition, with this career comes both a number of benefits and burdens. Overall, in our country, even in the world for that matter, neonatal nurses are needed and the demand for them will continue to grow in the future.
Neonatal nursing is a field of nursing designed especially for both newborns and infants up to 28 days old. The term neonatal comes from neo, "new", and natal, "pertaining to birth or origin”. Neonatal nurses are a vital part of the neonatal care team. These are trained professionals who concentrate on ensuring that the newborn infants under their care are able to survive whatever potential life threatening event they encounter. They treat infants that are born with a variety of life threatening issues that include instances of prematurity, congenital birth defects, surgery related problems, cardiac malformations, severe burns, or acute infection. Neonatal care in hospitals was always done by the nursing staff but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until well into 1960s. This was due to the numerous advancements in both medical care training and related technology that allowed for the improved treatment and survival rate of premature babies. According to the March of Dimes, one of every thirteen babies born in the United States annually suffers from low birth weight. This is a leading cause in 65% of infant deaths. Therefore, nurses play a very important role in providing round the clock care for these infants, those born with birth defects or other life threatening illness. In addition, these nurses also tend to healthy babies while their mothers recover from the birthing process. Prior to the advent of this specialized nursing field at risk newborn infants were mostly cared for by obstetricians and midwives who had limited resources to help them survive (Meeks 3).

There are more than 70% of premature babies that are born between 34 and 36 weeks gestation a year. When a baby is born early, or born with birth defects, the Neonatal Intensive Care unit is its first home. The nurse’s in the NICU have the difficult job of preparing baby’s and parents for a health life together. A baby who has been put into the NICU will stay there until it is healthy enough to go home.
A labor and delviery nurse has vast knowledge of the process and methods that are required for delivery and bring a new life into the world and is educated with the responsibilities of assiting the new born babies with their medical issues. Considering all the responsibilites needed to take on this career, such as assisting women with complications within the pregnancy, delivering a newborn and managing post birth issuses, the nurse must be professional in his or her work at all times. Obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and passing the licensing exam to become a Registered Nurse (RN) must be done first. The curriculum for attaining the degree relies heavily on sciences; mainly biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology. After receiving the RN license, the person must have at least 1 year of pediatric nursing experience to begin the process of becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner. Once an RN has obtained the requisite experience, they need to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing degree and take the licensing exam to become a nurse practitioner. The master’s degree program focuses heavily on Health Sciences such as health promotion, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, nursing theory, and any other specialized courses. They often offer information on nutrition, diet, and good health habits. The work of a Pediatric Nurse can range from assisting a Physician with the exam of a child to drawing blood. They chart the patient’s condition and symptoms for the physician’s review, as well as fellow colleagues. They can also administer medicine and give vaccinations to kids.
Pediatric nurses do a lot of the same tasks as a regular nurse. They draw blood, check vital signs, can perform physical examinations, and order diagnostic tests. However, the job of a pediatric nurse goes beyond regular nurses. They must have a caring relationship not only with the patient they are tending to, but also the patient’s family. Parents usually prefer a pediatric nurse over a regular nurse due to the caring relationship they carry. This is well known by the nurses as the caring process. My future career goal is to become an anesthesiologist. An anesthesiologist administers an anesthetic to patients before going into surgery. They also have to keep monitor of vital life signs and make sure everything in the body is functioning properly while under the anesthetic. I think being an anesthesiologist is something I’d enjoy being because I like being in control. I like making sure people are okay and that is specifically what anesthesiologists do; they make sure the patient can’t feel any pain and is comfortable during surgery.
A neonatologist has many tasks and responsibilities before, during, and after the birth of an at-risk newborn. If there is reason to believe there are going to be complications with a birth that would cause negative side effects for the infant, a neonatologist will be brought in to help. In these high-risk situations, a team effort is required and the neonatologist takes the lead position. The neonatologist will be responsible for advising the parents on what to expect during and after labor. After the infant is born, the neonatologist has to find a method to properly care for the baby. Because most premature babies have a low birth-weight, their lungs need to be supported and they need to be kept warm. During this whole process, the neonatologist interacts with the parents to keep them updated on their baby’s condition (Weaver, 2009).
