Neonatal Surgeon A neonatal surgeon’s job is to diagnose conditions in newborns afterbirth including breathing problems, infections and birth defects. As a neonatal surgeon, your job is to provide care to newborns and premature babies with major health issues and manage their healthcare. Last year around the end of May, I began watching the television show Grey’s Anatomy. I instantly became addicted I love the medical talk also the drama. Caring for your patient and trying to help them get better again was something that interest me very much. Applicant must obtain a medical doctor degree and have or be enrolled in a three-year residency program in general pediatrics. Applicant must provide medical school performance evaluation and medical school transcript. Applicant must be a US citizen or have permanent residency. Applicants should also use the electronic residency application service (ERAS) and the neonatal perinatal match program (NPMP). Lastly, applicant should submit a CV and a statement of long-term goals and should ask for three references to send letters of recommendation. Applicant will also undergo a background check and will submit proof of medical doctor degree and comply with a drug test; applicant should bring a resume and cover letter. Being a neonatal surgeon, you work all kinds of hours. Neonatal surgeons mostly are always on call meaning being able to be contacted to come to work at any time when needed. As a neonatal surgeon throughout the day, you will go on rounds. Rounds are when you present the medical problems and treatments of a patient to an audience consisting of doctor’s residents and medical students. Neonatal surgeons perform surgeries on babies who have serious health conditions so they could be in surgery quite a bit. Their patient’s infant could have prenatal asphyxia (A lack of oxygen during the birth process leaving to multiple problems that you see your kidney failure heart failure and so on.), congenital defects or birth defects (abnormalities of development such as congested heart defects brain malformation in gastrointestinal malformation) and pneumonia, meningitis or generalize infections in the blood (sepsis). Infants could have hereditary or genetic disorders of various kinds. Also an injury during the birth process or during the newborn period. The neonatal surgeon must perform surgeries to treat these kinds of life-threatening condition. After a long day or night in the OR a neonatal surgeon could go in an on call room and rest, check up on the patients or go home.
