Rolihlahla Mandela also known as Nelson Mandela is an illustrious politician and a really good role model to everyone. He stood up to racism without using racism or violence. Nelson is also a symbol of global peacemaking and accomplished many things during his lifetime. Nelson Mandela is a VERY inspirational man. Even though the beginning of his life wasn’t as great as most people, he went through all those tough times without giving up. On July 18, 1918, in the village of Mvezo, Transkei, a baby boy was born by Nonqaphi Nosekeni(mom) and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela(dad). The baby was named Rolihlahla Mandela. His father had a dream to become a chief but that dream sadly wasn’t fulfilled. Instead, he served as a counselor to tribal chiefs for several years but he then lost his title and fortune. Nelson’s family was forced to move to Qunu, a smaller village north of Mvezo. When Rolihlahla went to Methodist Primary School in Qunu, he was given the name Nelson by his teacher, Miss Mdingane, because all the students had to have Christian names. He completed his junior certificate at Clarkebury Boarding Institute and went to Wesleyan Secondary school. A few years later, Nelson’s father died from a lung disease. Nelson was later adopted by a chief named Jongintaba Dalindyebo. Nelson was being treated equally as the chief’s other children, they had the same title and the same type of respect. Nelson Mandela married his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko but they both split in 1958. Two years later, the ANC was banned in 1960. In the same year that the ANC was banned, Nelson Mandela created the underground military group called ‘Spear of the Nation’. Two years later, Nelson was arrested for a five-year sentence for protesting but he ran away. Another 2 years later, he was recaptured and sent to life imprisonment, he had to spend 18 years in Robben Island Prison. His prison room number in Robben Island was 466/64. In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison and the ban on the ANC was lifted by Frederik Willem de Klerk (the president of South Africa at that time). The reason for this was because Nelson and de Klerk had secret conversations when Nelson was in prison. Together in 1993, they won the Nobel Peace Prize because they got rid of the apartheid system (a system that separated people by their color in South Africa/showed discrimination and segregation towards the black people). A year later, South Africa had its first election that everyone with any skin color was allowed to vote. The ANC won the election and Nelson became the first black president in South Africa. While Nelson was president, he was really dedicated to completely stop racism. He created laws that prohibited discrimination against minorities, including whites.
