The Overworked High Schooler There has long been an argument as to whether or not high school students should hold a job, especially a service job such as in the fast food industry, during their school year. On one side of the argument are those who believe that holding said job teaches the teenagers responsibility and how to be financially responsible. They even often liken it to having a newspaper route or running a lemonade stand. The opposing side is of the belief that holding a service industry job while attending high school only distracts them from their work and has a negative impact on their studies. Before praising the fact that having a job as a high schooler can reflect some responsibility, one should consider the fact that the teenage mind functions differently than its adult version. There are still areas growing. Deborah Yurgelun-Todd, director of neuropsychology and cognitive neuroimaging at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. states: “I think the frontal lobe, that part of the executive region that we studied, is not always functioning fully in teenagers; or at least our data suggests that perhaps it 's not.” ("One Reason Teens Respond Differently to the World: Immature Brain Circuitry"). Their logic and reasoning differs greatly from that of their adult counterparts. Responsible adults understand that sacrifices must be made when they are confronted with equally important tasks. For example, many adults who work full time jobs and attend school, full time or part time, oftentimes sacrifice a rich social life. This is because they understand that there are but so many hours in a day and that sleep and other human activities have to be factored into said hours. On the other hand, a high percentage of what it is to be a teenager lies in their social life. They would rather take loads of pills and powders to stay awake, Red Bulls or even sleep in class or at work in an effort to dedicate more time to their social lives. They don’t mind losing sleep if it means that they will rise in social status. However, that loss of sleep can be extremely unhealthy for them. Today high school student is getting the job experience by working at McDonald’s or other fast food restaurants. Working a McDonald’s is not an easy job because the shift hours are not stable and income is not very high. High scholars are thinking that working at a fast restaurant is going to gain an income easily, especially for those in a middle class family that needs a part time job to support their self. It might be a bit of a struggle for the high student to learn to manage their time schedule between school and work. In the essay, “Working at McDonald’s,” Amitai Etzioni believes that high school students working at McDonald’s can destroy their future. He explains very clear through his point of view that if high school students choose to work at McDonald’s or any fast-food places, it would be a waste of time because they only take advantage of them. Etzioni think that these high school students are set for low paid job because if they don’t continue with their education path then they are stuck or don’t have any other opportunity. On the other hand, I agree and understand his point. High school students are falling behind in school, but I don’t see that working at McDonald’s is what causes them to end their future.
Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.
Most teens are getting jobs at high school ages. They would need a way to get to and from work on their own. More often than not a teens work schedule is not going to coincide with the parent or guardian's schedule. The job would just end up being a hassle for both the teen and the parent taking them. If they have a license, there would not be a problem with getting a job when they can take themselves whenever. Having a job in high school sets you up to be more responsible, builds time management skills, and you can save up college money or money to support yourself.
Most high school students need money to pay for a car and other essentials they may need or want (Adults Aren't the Only Ones That Need to Make Money). And in most cases the students have to earn this money by themselves with no parental help. It is very common to see high school students getting jobs over the summer because it is their time off and they need the income. But, it can be very hard to juggle a job, school work, and a social life when your school is year round. And in top of that most highschool students are athletes or involved in other extra curricular activities that take up time before or after school.
America is a very self-fulfilling economy and class matters after all in this so called “American Dream.” When did teenagers become any different. Last time I checked we were all equal. John M. Bridgeland in First, Help Today’s Struggling Youth. states that yet every year in America more than one million youth drop out of high school, crippling their chance at the American Dream.” John also states; “Nearly one in six, between the ages of sixteen to twenty four years old, is disconnected from the two structures that offer hope for their future.” These are school and work. This is where we need to promote growth and provide teens with any tools necessary to achieve. We need to be open to any ideas that this generation foresees in the future. Schools with enormous food courts where students can buy meals and drinks from commonly known franchises, such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola, are the schools with the most health problems. Fast-food franchises are showing up everywhere, but do these businesses belong in high schools? No! Schools are here to enlighten students for life after school. If high schools promote bad eating habits by placing fast-food franchises in their cafeterias, then how can students eat right and healthy beyond high school.
When going to high school, the one thing most teens have trouble understanding is the concept of what the world is like outside and beyond the world of schooling. Some teenagers have jobs but I don’t believe that it will prepare them for the vastness that is the outside world. The fragmentation of the country’s economy is being mended slowly, but to let it heal completely, we need young minds to have stable jobs so they can sustain themselves. In order to sustain themselves, students need proper guidance and preparation provided to them by the people who repeatedly promise and strive for success. Nowadays in the era of globalization, students are encouraged to have work part-time that will create them to become more experienced in their future, teach them to become more independent and mature in real life. Although the students have enough money to pay their fees and able to accommodate the necessities of life but we totally agree that the working part-time should be encouraged because work part-time can give more benefits to students. Many students love to have part-time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student.
