Some teachers agree that other pupils are also affected when teachers are forced to turn their attention to those students who have been absent for an extensive period of time (Epstein & Sheldon, 2002 in Reid 2008b). Even though they may be a minority, chronic absentees may divert the teacher’s attention from regular school attendees (Reid, 2008).

• poor attenders as ‘role models’
Students who often get away with truancy may appear acceptable or even desirable to other students. Truants may be seen as ‘daring’ and cause good attenders to start absenting themselves in an effort to emulate the former and to provide them with company. Truants can get labelled as ‘role models’ by other students.

The curriculum is so bulky that very often educators do not have any other choice than to give up their breaks and lunchtimes in an effort to help truants catch up on the work which was completed during their absence from school. This is time consuming and can be a source of frustration and irritation (Marburger, 2001) in (Gupta and Lata, 2014)

• impaired ability to build a strong teacher-pupil relationship
It can be very difficult for educators to build a strong, secure and trusting relationship with certain students due to their frequent absences.

Poor attendance could result in difficulty to maintain standards of discipline. For example, problems of truancy in schools may cause the possible erosion of overall school discipline, especially if habitual absentees are not sanctioned (Malcolm et al.,
