After so many years of struggling and working for the white people in America, the end of the civil war had finally brought some good news for them. They had been freed, even though this was good it was bad at the same time. Reconstruction though it was meant to help African Americans it was a failure, though attempts were made to help them out white southerners would always find a loophole and got their way. They made emancipated slaves think that sharecropping was a good thing and even if they knew it wasn't they still went into it because they didn't know what else to do. Also another thing that did not help was whte Leagues developing all across the South and even though they were all free southerners decided to segregate them with the Black Codes. …show more content…

If something were to happen to you then your wife and kids had to stay back to fulfill the contract. The contract was that white southerners would give their sharecroppers land and materials to work on the land and the African sharecropper would work on it till the debt was paid off. This was a trap because there was no possible way to pay it off every time you would need something new or if there was a defect in the stock it would be taken out of your pay and this would go from one generation to the next and it would be a loop. This was just like slavery in the first place because now they are working for the white and can not go anywhere.
