Taking place during the civil war era for the United States, A Rose for Emily is much less a story but rather a collection of rumors told to us by common towns’ people; fragments that help paint a generic picture of who Emily was as a person. The story, being written in a very creative way, demonstrates how a person’s legacy and reputation in society becomes strictly based on a few rumors. Fragments that are divided by people’s personal experiences or observations on the deceased with no way of gaining confirmation or learning more in detail about the person.
