The theme for National Public Health Week 2015 is, ‘‘together we can create the healthiest nation in one generation.’’ National Public Health Week occurs in the first full week of April each year, and it is a time that us as students and health care workers should show our community what public health is really all about. Health care workers can show improvements in technology, current safety measures and major changes in the delivery of our health care system. Public health protects and promotes the health of the people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play (APHA, 2015). Activity 1 After thirty plus years into the HIV and AIDS pandemic, it remains one of the top serious challenges to global public health. Awareness …show more content…
The college students at Tennessee State will help us reach our gal statement in the dorms and apartments by posting fact sheets about HIV/AIDS in their hallways and passing out condoms to each student on campus. Need: There is a need to raise awareness about sexually transmitted diseases in every community. Our lack of raising awareness and preventing this disease has contributed to the alarming HIV rates in the world. In 2011, Tennessee was ranked 15th among the 50 states in the number of HIV diagnosis. Many students at Tennessee State University have unprotected sex and put themselves at risk for developing HIV. This explains why raising awareness and prevention is so important to this community. Some facts by (aids.org, 2014) about HIV: • About 1 in 4 new HIV infections is among youth ages 13-24. • 1 in 8 living with HIV are unaware of their infection. • More than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection, and almost 1 in 8 (12.8%) are unaware of their infection. • By race, blacks face the most burden of HIV. • Homosexual men or men who have sex with other men, are most seriously affected by HIV. • In 2012, 13,712 people living with AIDS died. • There are 50,00 new HIV infections per
According to Allender, Rector, and Warner (2014), public health is a combination of both an art and a science (2014). The mission of public health nursing is to promote health, prevent disease and ultimately prolong life (Allender et al., 2014). In order for this to occur an assessment must take place. An aggregate or community assessment begins with a collection of data. This includes: the community’s health needs, risks, environmental conditions, financial resources through local census data, and a windshield survey (Allender et al., 2014). Through public health nursing, communities can collectively come together to help promote an overall better health standing.
During the second session, I will conduct the passive straight-leg raise assessment and the Thomas test, along with the trunk flexor, trunk lateral, and trunk extensor endurance tests, in an effort to identify any abnormal muscle tightness or weakness that can be addressed with the exercise program. I will use the results from these assessments to establish Barbara’s baseline levels of flexibility and core strength for comparison with future assessments to determine program effectiveness. In their initial conversation, Barbara identifies her primary objective as weight loss and indicates that she is motivated by tracking her results, so I have decided to take body composition and circumference measurements so we can track her progress toward her goals. During the assessments, Barbara was able to complete all of the fitness tests without complications. Rather than compare her scores to “norms,” I decided to simply record her scores to use as baseline values when measuring progress during future assessments, and to help with program
With the emergence of HIV over thirty years ago, it has been estimated that more than half a million people have died from AIDS in the United States. As of 2006, approximately 2.2 million people in the United States are HIV positive with roughly 50,000 new infections per year. The most alarming statistic is that 20% of people that are HIV positive are unaware, making them susceptible to passing on the infection unknowingly. Public health programs have been working since the emergence of HIV to educate the populations, trying to give them the knowledge and the tools to protect themselves from infection. As more information has been collected about the transmission of HIV and the relevant social behaviors of susceptible populations leading to transmission, public health programs have been adjusting their messages and methods.
Public health England has made an improvement to the nation’s health and has reduced health inequalities. They have done this by protecting the public’s health from infectious disease and other hazards to health also, through improving the public’s health and wellbeing and reducing health inequalities by improving population health through sustainable health care services and to build the capability of the public health system. Public health England has made the public healthier by encouraging discussions, advertising government and supporting action by local government, the NHS and other people organisations. Also, the public is supported so they can protect and improve their own health. Public health does this by sharing information with
The number of fundraisers and 5k walks increase over the years, but this doesn’t help others in finding ways that would help them prevent in having a health issue. As health issues arise in America, our knowledge of the issues should also be increasing. Targeting younger student to learn about health issues help them in the long run as well, but their parents as they go how and announce what they had just been taught at
As a conclusion, it is important that people know the danger of HIV/AIDS and actions to prevent more lives to be at risk should be taken. Especially when there is still no cure that is yet to be found, this disease should be eradicated by creating awareness to the public about the HIV/AIDS. In addition to that, the preventions for the disease should also be a common knowledge to the people around the world.
One of the arguments against installing a program of required exercise classes is that in order to get the full health benefit from the program some of the responsibility would have to depend on the student and their attitudes. Universities cannot force students to lead healthy lives. This is a true statement because not all students would take full advantage o...
Physical movement has never been more imperative in the United States than it is today. The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition finds that only one out of three grown-ups in the United States is getting the suggested measure of physical activity every week. More than 78 million U.S. grown-ups and around 12.5 million children and young people are considered to be over weight or obese. Getting the motivation to start a work out schedule can be an overwhelming, undertaking, particularly with diversions like TV, fast-food eateries, and sugary snacks accessible at all hours of the day.
According to the CDC, almost 1.1 million people in the United States have HIV, yet almost 20% of those people are unaware that they are living with the condition (CDC, 2013c). When the HIV broke out almost 30 years ago in the United States, the number of new cases in a year was 130,000. Now, each year the new number of cases being presented is approximately 50,000 (CDC, 2013c). In locations like Sub-Saharan Africa, the statistics are higher. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) states, “In 2011, an estimated 23.5 million people living with HIV resided in sub-Saharan Africa, representing 69% of the global HIV burden” (UNAIDS, 2012). The World Health Organization (WHO) reinforces this point by saying, “Sub-Saharan Africa is the most affected region [of HIV], with nearly 1 in every 20 adults living with HIV. Sixty nine per cent of all people living with HIV are living in this region” (WHO, 2013a). The statistics of infected people living in the United States is alarming but there are other countries, like Africa, which have higher rates of HIV due to very limited
At scholarship day, I focused on posters that were made by various nursing students that focused on things related to exercise and nutrition. No matter what population you work with in healthcare these are very prevalent topics that affect many aspects of life. The first poster that I focused on was titled “Community Based Health Education: Exercise in the Workplace.” For this research the students visited the employees of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. Their main goal was to educate on and improve health and to encourage exercise. The main population consisted of African American females over the age 50. The problem the students found was the employee’s had a lack of resources to maintain an active lifestyle. Their goal was to provide
One health is a concept of bringing together human, animal, and environmental health. That is a further step of the control of infectious disease. Over three decades, epidemic of new infectious diseases has occurred more often. Many unknown diseases such as Lyme disease, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Nipah virus disease, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) were not isolated before 1982. Moreover, growth rate of antibiotic resistance and re-emerging infectious diseases such as rabies and food-borne diseases are occurring nowadays. Where do these diseases come from? How can they be detected early? The answers are in the One Health which is a prevention strategy. In this report, it will be highlighted a brief explanation

In today’s world filled with technology, distractions, and easy-to-access transportation, it may be difficult to see why exercise is necessary. However, staying fit and healthy is a way to live longer, build confidence, and become motivated; by seeing the potential benefits, a person can propel themselves to continuously live an energy-filled and rewarding life. People can feel the benefits of exercising the day they start, and with continuous effort, can feel the advantages for the rest of their lives.
The first case of HIV in South Africa was detected in a homosexual man in 1982, and was diagnosed in a black South African for the first time in 1987 (McNeil, n.d.). At the time it was considered a disease that only affected the homosexual and impoverished black populations of the country. It wasn’t until 1991, when the number of infected people had risen to the tens of thousands, that significant government attention was given to the growing epidemic (McNeil, n.d.). Today the black population of South Africa is most affected by this virus, with an approximate HIV prevalence of 15%, which is drastically higher than the prevalence rates in the country’s other ethnic groups, which range from 0.3-3.1% (Shisana et al., 2014).
It is for people who want to improve their health and lifestyle through a fun and positive way. The audience doesn't necessarily need to be extremely fit or in good exercising condition. The audience needs to motivate each other and actually want to become healthier, both out and internally. That’s one of the attitudes the audience can have. Another way the audience can see my proposed solution and presentation is by just being informed about a problem our community is facing today. People who want to know about a problem to help prevent it or just simply be aware of it. This will hopefully improve people's lifestyles in a way, so we should get everyone who wants to change for the better. It will only be a small change, a small improvement, but it will all be worth it in the end. The audience is for anyone who wants to change their health for the better or someone else’s or anyone who wants to be given information about this problem and wants to know ways to solve
