The old man moved slowly over to his chair. As he started to sit down, his whole body shook. When he started to talk, the loud room became quiet. We waited silently as he explained his story of his service during the Vietnam War. He told us of his fears and the details down to the sweat rolling down his back. Then the next man spoke about his similar, but yet so different experience during his time in Iraq. One by one, each man and woman came up and shared their heart-wrenching story. The experience of each Veteran is different, but the bravery it took to overcome obstacles during the war is the same. I felt immense pride being able to sit in the same room full of the courageous veterans who risked their lives for me, my family and this country. …show more content…

They have given America an elite example of how to defend ourselves and keep each other safe. They have shown our nation how to achieve freedom. The future generations will look at the history that they have made and use it as their guide to keep our country on top. Now, it is the next generation’s job to make a strong future. That next generation is me and my peers. However, we must ask ourselves what can we do to serve our country. We must learn from our veterans selfless acts of service to lead and serve others. We must spread the word of the great sacrifices our veterans have made. We must also realize the importance of voting and encourage other younger members to vote and express their opinions. We must be the voice of democracy that reminds our friends and speaks to the world that our nation stands tall only due to the men and women who lived a life of sacrifice to our greatest nation. The moment I visited the veterans seems frozen in time. Tears stream down my face as I listen to the stories.
