It takes one person to change the trajectory of another person’s life. During my work experience I dealt with instances where my ethics, empathy, and professionalism guided me when handling patient’s problems. For example, a patient’s, (I will call Tom) MRI results showed a congenital anomaly in his brain. As a result, Tom required a consult with a brain specialist. Unfortunately, Tom recently aged out of the foster care system; and was lacking insurance coverage; the financial means; and supports for medical treatment. To clarify, my task of notifying the patient was completed, but I felt compelled to further aid Tom by securing a brain consult for him. After days of phone calls, I learned Tampa General Hospital provides medical services to the indigent and they agreed to see Tom. For this purpose, I advised Tom to go to Tampa General, nonetheless he was resistant. Next, I persisted by calling Tom every day until he relented by admitting himself to the hospital. Social workers have the ability to make direct, beneficial changes in people’s lives, often the people who need it the most. It may rarely be world-changing on a macro level, but social work, when done right, can have world changing effects, for the better, on the people it touches.
I have always been drawn to serving others. I enjoy listening to the challenges people face and helping them arrive at a healthy conclusion. I take pride in advocating for those who are unable to advocate for themselves and genuinely care for every person who lacks access, or is denied access to services their community provides. However, I never thought of social work as a profession. I always thought psychology was what I needed to study in able to obtain my long-term goals of working in a school setting or becoming a therapist. It was not until my junior year here at Monmouth University, I realized psychology was not the right field for me. As psychology became a more research-based program, I began to examine social work as a major and explore the classes they offered. The Introduction to Social Work class opened up so many more opportunities. I finally understood the content I was learning and was able to apply those learning’s to the kind of work I potentially saw myself doing. In other words, I felt at home in the field of social work, like I had finally found my calling.
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social justice and human rights.
The MSW degree along with my bachelors in psychology gives me a great opportunity to build my career as a social worker who will strive to act as a leader and empower others to help those in need. Ever since I was a child, I have been drawn to help others less fortunate than myself. Through my years of volunteer and educational experiences, I have discovered a passion for helping children and families. These experiences cemented my resolve to help children thrive in a safe, caring, and nurturing environment. They are the most vulnerable population of people whose rights are often infringed upon due to their inability to speak up for themselves. I have been working as a social worker for the past three years. In all these years, it has always been my desire and passion to acquire enhanced social skills and knowledge to help me empower disadvantaged individuals and families take control of their lives. My desire therefore to pursue a Masters of Social Work degree (MSW) has been inspired by over three years of continuous work with families, children, youths and adults who require support to cope and combat oppressive structures and social injustices. As a child, I never experienced racism it wasn’t until my teenage years when I started to take notice to the prejudice that occurs in America. It probably never affected me before this time because I am white, however, I’ve seen it happen to kids I went to school with and friends of mine. The one occurrence of racism that deeply affected me took place in 2009 during the swine flu epidemic. I rode the bus with this kid who I have previously encountered in the past name Augusto. His family moved from Mexico the prior year and I would ask him questions about his experience with coming to America. Well because of the swine flu epidemic people were blaming Mexicans saying that it was their fault the virus came to America.
As a student who began her college career without specific objectives, I never thought I would be writing a personal statement for an application to receive a Master’s Degree in the social work profession. However, I feel now that there is no other future for me than that of offering my education and personal commitment to vulnerable individuals in order to stabilize their lives. After careful consideration of all areas of social work, I have found that my main area of interest is in providing resources and encouragement for individuals with disabilities to gain the freedom to live independent lifestyles without discrimination. My personal goal in this profession is to make every possible effort in assisting these individuals with finding the means to satisfy their needs.
I have never had a real job, but I have taken commissions and sold pieces since seventh grade. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be an artist and that the job title emphasized entrepreneurship and self employment. These past few years, I have spent my time promoting my art and trying to establish myself with a strong base. My work experience includes making art, website building, talking to potential buyers, and selling art. Because of the different facets of my job, I have initiated a web of important connections and gained the skills necessary for being self employed. I have learned to vary my streams of income as only having a website or only selling at galleries is not feasible or wise as it is important to create a financial safety net and vary clients. Through commissions and freelancing, I have become better at interacting with others, developing different styles that suit each piece, and making sales.
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, in July 2016, 20.5 million people ages sixteen to twenty-four years old were employed. I was lucky enough to be one of those people. Being one of those people gave me the chance to experience several life skills. Over the course of a year, obtaining my first job gave me the opportunity to learn about applying, beginning, and progressing.
