Ellen and I were growing up and along with getting older, came increased responsibility and a bit of independence. Now, our mother allowed us to pick up a few groceries unchaperoned, happy to do so, we carried our willow shopping basket, money in one hand and a grocery list in the other, with a note to give to the store clerk who would gather the required items for us. We felt so grown up as we moseyed to the Abtsweg together, not in a group as we did when we walked to school with friends, but just the two of us; my sister and I, wearing matching brown coats and perfectly starched bows in our hair. This was or first international vacation since arriving in Holland from Indonesia. Enthused and in high spirits, we were bound for a region on the North Rhine; Germany’s longest river which flows through the country for a total of 865 kilometers. During the relatively fleeting drive from Overschie, Noke planned a leisurely route with plenty of interesting stops along the way and without hotel reservations, we were free to stop whenever and wherever the mood struck to stay overnight. Düsseldorf; a former fishing village at the mouth of the idyllic River Düssel, which flows into the enormous Rhine River, was our first destination, where we planned to spend a few days exploring the wondrous Altsadt (Old Town) borough, home to several of the city’s most beautiful churches. The oldest, Sankt Lambertus Basilica, built in the 13th century with it’s twisting spire made the Düsseldorf's skyline unique. As we approached the town, Mom; an avid window shopper, was fervent to see the promenade along the river banks lined with shops and cafés, it looked like a giant open air terrace. Uncle Noke took excellent care of us, making sure that we had the best experience possible and this picture-perfect riverside location was a sensational introduction to the rest of our family
