Curling is a very cold, unpopular sport that I have known since I was four years old, when my parents started a curling club. Now, I am not talking about a curling iron that makes your hair look nice. I am talking about the sport of curling that is played on ice with rocks and brooms. To me, curling is not an odd, unknown sport. Yet within the world of sports, it is uncommon, and people only recognize it because of the Winter Olympics. To start the club, my parents first rented ice time from The Chiller North. When you curl, though, the ice has to be in perfect condition, and since The Chiller doubled as hockey ice, there were a lot of slopes, which is not ideal for curling. We cleared out all of the junk and dirt, began to put up new walls, and added in structures for the two curling sheets. Every spare moment my parents were not at work, they were at the curling club, as was I. It was exciting seeing everything come together. I remember my favorite part was painting the walls and at one point, I decided to paint a picture, that is still there today, on the concrete floor with the paint. After six months of planning, construction, and creating the ice, the curling club finally opened. It was probably one of the happiest days of my life, since it meant I did not have to help with all the hard work anymore. Instead, unbeknownst to me, it meant I would have to start helping with all of the club events instead, since my parents were the President and Vice President of the club for the first five years of its life. Now that the club was up and running, my parents now spent their free time running it instead of building it. At this point in my life, I wanted very little to do with curling and the club itself. Now, do not get me wrong, I liked the sport and I knew the basics of it, but I did not want to play it, watch it, or talk about it. Through those years, the club went through some upgrades, like getting a third sheet of ice, and eventually other people took over as President and Vice President.
