Introduction Narrative discourse, or the ability to recall and tell an orderly and continuous account of an event or a series of events, is a vital aspect of social communication. Narrative discourse includes the ability to express imaginary stories, recount personal events, and describe instructions to execute a task. During the aging process, individuals often experience changes in their language abilities and executive functioning, or the control and regulation of cognitive actions and planning (Bakos et al., 2008). Despite these changes, most aspects of narrative discourse are well preserved during normal aging (Cooper, 1990; Estes, 2012; Ulatowska, Chapman, Highley, & Prince, 1998). Participants will be recruited from nursing homes and assisted living facilities within Murfreesboro. To be a participant in the study, an individual must be within the target age and have a cognitive impairment from a stroke or TBI. Most importantly, individuals have the cognitive capacity to consent to participate in the study. In individuals suffering brain damage due to a stroke, only individuals with a diagnosis of Broca’s aphasia, anomic aphasia, and right hemisphere aphasia will be allowed to participate in the study. The exclusion of individuals with Wernicke’s aphasia and global aphasia is due to the severe language deficits present in these disorders. Also, individuals with a concurrent diagnosis, such as a coexisting TBI and stroke injuries, will not be permitted to participate in the study. This data will be collected as a method to assist the researcher in identifying individuals who meet the inclusionary and to provide demographic information of participants. Additionally, the participants’ demographic information will be used to determine if any factors, such as time since incident or therapy experience, could potentially skew the results of the study. The participants will complete the narrative tasks at their residence facility. All responses will be audio recorded. Participants will be asked to complete two narrative tasks, one using pictorial stimuli and one using personal stimuli, in one session. In order to counterbalance any effect of order, the order of the two tasks will be alternated between the participants with every other participant completing the picture description task
