Nanoscience Personal Statement

I sat there in the gym sauna after an intense practice, attempting to capture grey drops of sweat dripping from my face into a test tube while stomaching concerned looks from the other women. I was collecting the sweat for a Nanoscience research project. The class was rigorous as it entailed a semester long research project which deterred most from this fascinating course, but attracted me because I knew it would be my only opportunity to try any sort of research before college.

At the time I took Nanoscience, I was also newly involved in the Sports Medicine program at my school. Before I joined the program, I had always known I wanted to pursue something that would allow me to help people, but I was not sure how I would be able to; being part of this program helped me realize what an incredible difference I could make by working in the medical field. While in the program, I loved working with the athletes and being able to see them make a quick recovery because of the help that I gave them. However, as a student trainer and avid volleyball player, I was often troubled by how ineffective athletic tape became once the athlete or I started sweating. For example, we began collecting our own sweat to use for testing, but found that we needed a more reliable sweat source. With some research, we discovered that because Gatorade is made to made to replenish the electrolytes lost through sweat, it contains many similar ingredients. But, instead of having to make our own flavorless Gatorade, we found that Pedialyte, a drink specifically designed to keep babies from getting dehydrated, is an extremely close model of sweat.
