Throughout the years injuries have stayed part of the game and the NFL has taken their time to increase player safety. The NFL should increase player safety because of the injuries have occurred. Some of the injuries may be lifetime injuries. Serious brain injuries have been linked to football as, well as heart issues and other permanent heath problems. When the NFL was introduced in the 1920's player safety was in the creator's mind; there were only 14 teams, the uniform was made of thick wool, and helmets were not mandatory. The head injuries were gruesome; concussions to cracked skulls were the injuries players would suffer. The injuries became serious enough for the NFL to increase player safety. In 1930's helmets became mandatory. Even though players were able to wear helmets, the helmets were leather, and had no facemask. By the 1950's the NFL was changed, the overtime quarter was born and players were wearing hard plastic helmets. It was not until the 1950's the NFL made the plastic helmets mandatory. Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. However, the National Football League (NFL) is in the midst of a controversial issue. Is the NFL getting soft? This has been a debatable issue for several years. While some believe that implementing all these rules in the NFL is progressively turning the game soft, others say that the NFL is not getting soft; it is just trying to make the game safer for its players.
Concussions, a minor traumatic brain injury that may occur when the head hits an object, are a huge problem in football in high schools and lower levels today. Concussions are very common in football, concussions have a huge negative effect on the brain, and parents and schools are worried about their kids safety. Concussion, in football, are a rising problem especially since the NFL is being sued for hundreds of millions because of concussions. High School football is very violent on children and thats why it is losing some participants.
Stats for the football leagues are a big deal for fans. Fans are obsessed with numbers its a big deal for the fans. In 2001 there were 150,000 athletes that were injured at the age of nineteen and younger. In 2009 there were 250,000 injured athletes at the age of nineteen and younger. There is a 6.3 per 1,000 incidence a college player will suffer a concussion while a high school athlete has a 11.2 per 1,000. Risk of concussions in football is high and equipment should continue to improve, but rules should stay the same in order for the game to remain
American football in the past several years have really developed, not only from the fans perspective but also from the players and the official heads. Safety is the most important topic talked about in all sports but it is a must in football, especially because of the way the game is played with all of the tackles and hits. It is really important not only for the players to be safe but also the officials to keep it safe. Both players and officials play a key role in making the game of football safe and interesting to watch for the fans and a great experience for the players as well. As said in the Denver Post, players are expected to play with the rules…coaches are expected to teach…and game officials to emphasize the rules. The game of football, in the NFL, is safer than it has ever been because of the rules, penalties and the equipment.
The American people not only love to win in anything, they live to win even when they, themselves are not the ones actually winning the game. The American people cheer with great enthusiasm when their team comes in first in a game, championship, or competition. To place anything less than first in any sport or academic competition is unfathomable, it is unappreciated, and frowned upon. Sadly, yet true the majority of all football players in the National Football League (NFL) see it this way as well. The USA is to blame for that. Football players throughout their careers during both on and off seasons, and practices are pushed to their breaking point, and most American people are unaware of the damage that is causes to their body mentally and physically, and the fear is that many of these players do not know the consequences of this brutally, dangerous sport.
To understand the issue of concussions in the NFL we must first understand exactly what a concussion is. A concussion is a minor traumatic brain injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Severe concussions can cause loss of consciousness and/or forgetfulness. However, you do not need to lose consciousness to have a concussion. Minor concussions usually cause headache, nausea, dizziness, and tiredness. An NFL study showed that most concussions occur when one player delivered a hit to the side of the head of another, and when the player was either standing still or moving slowly. These hits that cause concussions pack an average force of 980-pounds. Concussions affect professional athletes as well as amateur or youth football players. Studies have shown that high school football players are nearly twice as likely to get concussions as college football players and high school athletes in other sports. Also, they show that 47% of high school football players say they suffer a concussion each season. As a result about 250,000 people under the age of 19 went to the emergency room with concussions in 2009, compared with 150,000 in 2001.
Present players in the National Football League disagree with all the protective rules now but when they are no longer playing football it’ll be a different story. Players also tend to forget that they won 't be playing football forever and that they will need to be healthy later on in life when they can no longer play football. It’s not okay for players to complain about the safety rules now, and then later claim the National Football
Concussions occur regularly on the football field and have always been an injury associated with football. They occur at all levels from little league to the NFL. One of the earliest reported concussion...
The NFL has already had changes to the way the players are allowed to come in contact with a defenceless player, but it does not address the problem as well as it needs to (“NFL” n.p.). There should changes that affect how long an athlete must sit out after receiving a head injury to avoid more brain trauma. Also, there should be trained personnel at every game to decrease the amount of undiagnosed concussions which will increase the player’s safety. These changes would make big strides in protecting the players while also appealing to Americans by not further changing the contact rule which would ease this
Head Injuries In Football Since football was created in 1869, head injuries have been an issue. Constant contact and bodies colliding give the sport its bad reputation. Football is America’s most popular sport but many fear the game due to its reputation. All football leagues have been improving helmets to reduce injuries but the head injuries can still be prevented greatly.
The NFL need to improve their safety on players that play in the NFL. Also for the men that play in the NFL and take all them hits they deserve more money then what they get. Most players in the NFL catch brain disease once they leave the NFL. Also most NFL players go broke when they retire out the NFL. NFL players get on drugs while they in the NFL which hurts them when they retire. The NFL has bad effects on the players of the game during and after there career.
Football is a relatively dangerous sport. In the game, the whole body is open to taking shots from opposing teams every play, but the most dangerous area to be hit is the head. Hits that lead to players having their heads
Football is a dangerous sport; players go into games knowing that they could get hurt. The kickoff plays a huge role when it comes to head injuries. According to an article by Mark Maske, there were a total of 270 concussions in the NFL in 2010 and 35 of them were from the kickoff. Though 35 may not seem like a large number it still would make the game safer if there were zero concussions instead of 35. The number has decreased over the years though, “Players suffered 266 concussions last season, including 20 on kickoffs, according to the study released Tuesday by Edgeworth Economics, a consulting firm. That was down from 270 concussions suffered by NFL players during the 2010 season, 35 of them on
To sum it all up,Professional sports are too risky for players because they can get head injures,CTE,and concussions. Also they can get hurt and cause issues.I predict that if players keep getting hurt then the safety policies would finally complain about the dangerous sports. In my opinion if all of this happens just because of a sport they should stop all of it and make a improved version of the game where its safe. When the players play the game they might go
