My responsibility to America When someone asks, “What is America all about?” the regular answer will likely be something on the lines of “freedom” or “liberty”. And that’s a good generalization, considering the constitution begins not with what we can’t do, but rather what we can do. The privilege of living in America, and I do mean privilege, is earned through support of your country. The USCIS defines your responsibility to America involves taxes, obeying laws, going to Jury duty and participating in your community. These are the basic needs that without, our nation wouldn’t survive. Everyone pays taxes, some more than others. Everyone has either done some form of community service or military service. It is also a vital part of keeping one’s community moving forwards. Planting trees, building shelters, organizing books, or running food drives for the less fortunate gets a load of work off of needed workers, and keeps someone who could be doing nothing with themselves busy. This is part of the reason why many retired folks are involved in their community, other than a sense of goodwill. Returning to the topic addressed in the introduction, European countries do well to provide common goods for the people. This is done through compulsory civil service, through military or communal working. Some may see this as Tyrannical forced labour, but many see it as giving back to the nation and being able to deserve the rights they have instead of being handed them at birth. In America, there is a sort of compulsory service, but shortened from a year to 10 hours. Enough to get one into the community, but not necessarily enough to put a dent in all of the work that needs to be done through the year. Many projects go unfinished, and especially in inner cities and impoverished areas, people go unassisted.
