My Personal Outlook on Elementary Education

I believe that teaching is the single most important aspect of life. Not only is teaching an imperative career, but teaching outside of the profession is very important. People gain knowledge of new things every day and learning is something that continues throughout your whole life, in and out of school. My personal experiences in life have made me want to be a teacher. These influences come from my family and teachers that I have had. My aunt taught elementary school and is now the superintendent of education in our county; my younger sister let me teach her as we were growing up and a combination of these inspired me to pursue a career in education. I had many teachers that made me want to learn, these are people that I have a great deal of respect for. These are people that made me want to teach.

I feel that the nature of students is very diverse. I believe that all children can learn and will learn if they have someone to teach them. The nature of every student will be different and exclusive to that individual. My job as a teacher will be to find the best possible way to relate to each student and motivate the student to want to learn. Each child will learn through a different technique and students and teachers should work together to find the most appropriate technique.

My personal outlook is that knowledge is relative. Knowledge is constructed and reliant on person, place and time. Any child can learn if they are given the opportunity and the tools to do so. Knowledge is relative because a teacher can motivate a student that wasn’t motivated before and that student will want to learn, this is dependent on the person.

A child that is entered in pre-kindergarten has a head start in learning to cooperate with children; learning to obey the rules in a school environment and the child will excel even more in elementary school if they have a pre-kindergarten background.

After graduating with a degree in elementary education, pre-kindergarten and a minor in communications, I will pursue a career teaching to students at a young age. I want to teach early education in a pre-kindergarten program, because early development is a field that is growing with importance. I also plan to work on my master’s degree in education during the first few years that I teach. I will join the NEA or the AFT in hopes that I can make a difference in the education field and improve the working atmosphere and salaries of teachers.
