My decision to pursue a career as a physician was not a blinding revelation, being the daughter of two immigrant parents the thought of becoming a physician seemed distant. In high school I pursued to obtain what for me was then the highest education I thought I would be able to achieve which going to college and obtaining a bachelor’s degree. As the quote by Ralph Ellison highlights, “When I discover who I am, I’ll be free”. This quote resonates with my first year in college, as I have been able to find my passion for medicine. More specifically, I explored my values and how I wanted to shape my future. I reflected upon the encounters and dramatic effects that physicians have had in my own family. My father knew that he wanted to save his daughter but the conditions my mother was facing made it impossible. He chose for the doctor to save my mother. However, the doctor still persisted to try and save both. My mother continued to fight hard and to try to deliver the baby; however, the baby opened her eyes too soon inside the amniotic sac and the amniotic fluid flushed into her eyes causing her lacriminal ducts to clog. The conditions only worsened as the doctor realized that the baby had inhaled the meconium. The problems that arose made it more difficult to save the baby, it would be a miracle they said if both the baby and my mother survived. My mom and doctor kept working together to be able to deliver the baby, as the doctor’s options were running low he performed a vacuum assisted vaginal delivery. Against all odds, I was delivered October 11, 1997 thanks to the doctor that did not give up and to the amazing team that continued to help my mother. I am stimulated to learn gross anatomy, histology, pathology, and the list continues. However, I am more captivated by how the knowledge I will gain in medical school will allow me to perform the extraordinary lifesaving procedures that physicians are able execute. Although, medicine is not always ideally as I have written, I now that as a physician I would use my knowledge and my experiences to provide the best holistic care to my patients. My culture, my experiences, and my education will bring a different perspective to the medical field. I aspire to have the ability and knowledge to save a child that might not live, to save a woman that suffers a heart stroke, and to even provide the necessary treatment for a child with a mere cold. Additionally, participating in the Loma Linda Gateway to the Health Professions program the summer before starting college I was able to further solidify my passion for medicine. During the program, I was able to become acquainted with different health professions. I spoke to different physicians, such as cardiothoracic surgeons, family medicine physicians, and urologists. Their advice and their insight into medicine lite the fire inside me. As, I heard them speak their word echoed in my head. I knew from then on that I wanted to make the change that those physicians are making possible
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. A question I have been asked more often than not, “What would you rather be if not a doctor?” Well, my journey as a doctor has seen a share of crests and troughs, but I will not have it any other way. I am a book lover, and every good read is time saved; I have trekked mountains, and every step brought forth a sense of achievement; I have been recognized for my English debating skills many a time. Every cup held was precious, but none of it so fulfilling and rewarding as another human being trusting you with his breath. This texture of human relationships is unique to this profession, and is probably what makes it sublime to the eyes of a common man.
Four years of hard work on my undergrad is only half of the journey. When I get accepted into a medical school the workloads will get even more challenging, a decision that I hope I will not regret along the years of hard work I have accumulated. I want to become a doctor because the feeling that I get when I have helped someone’s health get better is a reward itself. I don’t need the payment for that. I lied, making $300k a year is also a nice benefit of being a doctor in addition to making my patients feeling better and seeing their progression improve. The money is nice nonetheless, but I will have genuine care for my patients rest assured. I honestly hope money will not change the way that I am in regards to my care. I aspire not to become that doctor who just chases after money, that doctor who views his patient’s face as a source of income. Also, coming from an immigrant family after the Vietnam War, my expectations entrusted onto me are the dangling weights on my shoulder. My dad used to work two jobs, 18 hours a day in order to put food on the table and a roof over our heads for my family. He worked in those circumstances for ten years before he received a manager position at the Wynn. My parents do not have everything, but have worked around to give me everything I have ever wanted. I have had many experiences that have helped me an immense amount in shaping my choice of a career. Being a member of the New Visions Health and Medical Careers programs at Cayuga Medical Center allowed me to take my education into my own hands by escaping the classroom into the hospital for my senior year of high school. During my full-year medical internship, I shadowed over 30 medical disciplines, in both in-patient and outpatient facilities. Additionally, I clinically shadowed the care of patients from birth to the end of life of many different patients. This gave me a thorough understanding and a dense foundation of healthcare and allowed me to take initiation of my own
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. I know of students—many friends and acquaintances of mine included—that have the most sure-fire, inspirational stories that align with their desire to become doctors, surgeons, physician assistants, etc. They always seemed to have a story that emphasized their desire to “give back” what they have received from the medical community. In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.

My passion and admiration for the healthcare field began during my teenage years, when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis—a chronic, autoimmune disease affecting various joints throughout my body. Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life.
